American poet. Professor in Department of English, Brown University, 1927-1963. Curator of the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays, John Hay Library, Brown University, 1930-1963.
Poet, dramatist, Blake scholar. Professor of English at Brown University and Curator of Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays.
American poet.
Poet, dramatist, Blake scholar, and Professor of English at Brown University.
American poet; Brown University English Department, 1927-1963; Curator of Harris Collection, Brown University Library, 1930-1963; Professor Emeritus and Curator Emeritus, 91963-1970.
S. Foster Damon was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on February 12, 1893. In 1914 he graduated from Harvard, where he majored in music and was captain of the fencing team for two years. During the first World War, Damon worked in an airplane factory and gave bayonet instruction to student soldiers at Harvard. After the war he was an instructor in the English Department at Harvard and earned a master of arts degree in 1926. Two years earlier, his book, William Blake, His Philosophy and Symbols, had been published and reviewed by Richard LeGallienne, who noted that Damon, with his interest in alchemy and spiritualism, was especially qualified to expound "the esoteric side of Blake's genius," and placed Blake "in his historical earthly setting with true biographical art." Damon was to become one of the world's leading authorities on Blake, publishing several influential books during the course of his career.
He came to Brown in 1927, where he joined his cousin, Lindsay Todd Damon, in the English Department as assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 1930 and professor in 1936. He was curator of the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays in the University Library, and was particularly interested in building up its extensive collection of sheet music. He built up the Collection's holdings of printings of A Visit of St. Nicholas, and shared his knowledge in a television presentation, Styles in Santa Claus on the Evening on College Hill series. He was also interested in the history of square dancing and actively participated in a square dancing group consisting of library employees and others.
His talents and interests ranged far and wide. He wrote an annual Punch and Judy show for the Sea Fair at Annisquam, Massachusetts, where he spent his summers. His play, The Witch of Dogtown, which won the Russell Crouse award, was produced in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1955. He was a founder of the Harvard Musical Review . He also wrote a biography of Amy Lowell, a book on the history of Punch and Judy, and works on square dancing, Yankee Doodle, and witchcraft. He was one of the poets whose verse was published in Eight Harvard Poets . Under the pseudonym "Samuel Nomad" he published in 1964 a book of 66 sonnets (from beyond the grave ) entitled Nightmare Cemetery . He also published in 1971 The Moulton Tragedy, a heroic poem with lyrics, which he had been writing since 1928 and of which a number of excerpts had been printed since the 1930s in Poetry magazine and other periodicals.
In 1968 the University published William Blake: Essays for S. Foster Damon, and celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday with a two-day festival, during which Damon read from his poems, a music professor played Damon's compositions, and students performed parts of Damon's play, The Witch of Dogtown, and a seminar on Blake was held. Two hundred copies were printed of A Birthday Garland for S. Foster Damon: tributes collected in honor of his seventy-fifth birthday, . He also received an honorary Litt. D. degree from Brown in 1968, awarded with a citation which began:
No citation can summarize adequately the variety of your accomplishments. Your pioneering book, published in 1925, is the foundation for all serious critical study of William Blake conducted since. Your work on Amy Lowell, Thomas Holley Chivers, James Joyce, and many other authors is distinguished. Poet, playwright, composer, pianist, choreographer, gourmet -- few men, even of the Renaissance, have shown your omnipresence in the creative arts, and your sensitivity to all of them.
Damon died on December 25, 1971, in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Title:
E.E. Cummings Collection, 1902-1962.
Manuscripts of poems, short stories, and collections of verse, notes from his school days, and correspondence make up the bulk of the Cummings Collection, 1902-1968. The Works series contains drafts of several collections of verse as well as individual poems. The evolution of Poems: 1923-1954 is particularly well represented in both typed manuscript and galley format. There are also essays written by Cummings for college exams and two notebooks with notes and poetry fragments. The Letters series is mostly composed of single letters to various people, with the exception of Howard L. Nelson, with whom Cummings maintained a lively correspondence concerning books, poets, and fatherhood over a 22-year period. The Recipient series contains letters from admirers, publishers, and friends including Merle Armitage, Robert Bly, Hart Crane, Judson Crews, Foster Damon, John Dos Passos, Amy Lowell, Stewart Mitchell, Marianne Moore, Marion Morehouse, Charles Norman, James Purdy, Stephen Spender, Samuel Ward, and Louis Zukofsky. The Miscellaneous series is largely composed of notes from Cummings' school days, some elementary, but mostly collegiate. Additionally, a large number of letters sent to Marion Morehouse, most of them written after Cummings' death, are present, along with quite a few letters to Charles Norman. Other miscellany includes manuscripts by other authors, a copy of Cummings' birth certificate, and musical scores.

Papers, 1839-1957.
Collection consists of personal, professional and family papers: letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, photographs and newspaper clippings. It is a complete record of Mitchell's public and personal life over fifty years. The strength of the collection is in the letters of American writers of the modern movement; friends of Mitchell's such as E.E. Cummings, John Dos Passos, Robert Hillyer and Marianne Moore. Other correspondents include Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, Kenneth Patchen, Conrad Aiken and the owners, editors and contributors to The Dial in the 1920s. Members of the N.E. academic community are strongly represented, inc. Samuel Eliot Morison and Arthur Meier Schlesinger. Mitchell's outgoing correspondence is preserved in carbon, or in the original. Mitchell's personal correspondence, with family and friends, is only partially organized. Literary mss. include short works by Dos Passos and Samuel Eliot Morison, and an unpublished memoir by Mitchell, Gateway to Nowhere. Papers of Mitchell's aunt, Georgine Holmes Thomas, include letters and diaries (ca. 1839-1940) and a multi-volume autobiography in ms.

Title:
Papers of Thomas O. Mabbott, 1918-1979.
The papers of Thomas O. Mabbott document his scholarship and reflect his leisure time interests. The first series consists of nine boxes of personal papers, such as certificates, diplomas, photographs, and correspondence. This correspondence includes letters from: Walter R. Benjamin, Clarence S. Brigham, S. Foster Damon, August Derleth, J. Milton French Clarence Gohdes, Charles F. Heartman, Philip Jordan, John W. Ostrom, Mary E. Phillips, Frank L. Pleadwell, Arthur H. Quinn, G.E.B. Saintsbury, Vincent Starrett, William P. Trent, Robert W.G. Vail, and J.H. Whitty. The next two series represent Mabbott's life's work as a scholar. The "literary interests" section reflects his reading and research subjects. Included are notes on authors from William Blake and John Milton to Washington Irving and Mark Twain. There are also articles by Mabbott and others on a variety of literary subjects. The Edgar Allan Poe series is the largest in the collection, nearly thirty-five boxes documenting the main thrust of Mabbott's research career. These research files relate to specific Poe works, published and unpublised articles about Poe by Mabbott and others, copies of Poe's writing, and copies of journals in which his works originally appeared. The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe edited by Thomas O. Mabbott is found here in manuscript form, complete with discarded plans, illustrations, page proofs, contracts, and reviews. The next four series represent Mabbott's other interests. There are 3 boxes of broadsides and materials relating to 15th century prints. Another 3 boxes contain certificates, auction catalogs, and articles about his special hobby, numismatics. One other box contains correspondence and published material relating to his interest in newspaper collecting. The writings of Maureen Cobb Mabbott and her correspondence make up the final series.
