Inventory of the Roy Fuller Correspondence with Julian Symons and Jack Clark LIT/Fuller MSS 00068., 1937-1992
Title:
Inventory of the Roy Fuller Correspondence with Julian Symons and Jack Clark 1937-1992
British poet and novelist, Roy Broadbent Fuller (1912-1991), was born in Failsworth, Lancashire, but moved with him family to Blackpool after his father died. Admitted as a solicitor in 1934, he married Kathleen Smith in 1936. With their young son and only child, John Fuller, the couple moved to London just before the outbreak of World War II. There, Roy Fuller joined the Woolwich Equitable Building Society, a home-mortgage company, with whom he remained until his retirement in 1987. Fuller only left the Woolwich for military duty during World War II, from 1941-1946, when he served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Navy, first as a radar mechanic in Kenya, then as a radio and radar officer at the Admiralty. As one of the most significant of the World War II English poets, Fuller spoke in a more studied manner, and with the voice of the home-front denizen, rather than that of the fighting man. He was identified with The Movement, a postwar group of British poets generally dedicated to robust and ironic poems, forthright in tone and often intricate in versification. Other poets in The Movement included Philip Larkin, Donald Davie, D.J. Enright, Elizabeth Jennings, and Thom Gunn. Roy Fuller died in Blackheath, London 27 September 1991. This collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Roy Fuller and Julian Symons, representing a relationship which started on terms of business and grew to a close friendship. The correspondents are primarily Roy Fuller and Julian Symons with occasional addendums from Kate Fuller to Roy Fuller's letters. Also present are letters from John Fuller to the Symons'; letters and post cards from Roy Fuller to Jack Clark, many regarding the Poem-of-the-Month Club; and Roy Fuller to Sebastian Barker. Most of the letters from John Fuller and one from Kate Fuller were written after Roy Fuller's death. Other items include poems, obituaries, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets pertaining to Roy Fuller's life and/or subjects exchanged between Fuller and Clark.

Nekes, Werner, 1944-. Nekes collection of optical devices, prints and games.
Title:
Nekes collection of optical devices, prints and games. ca. 1700-ca. 1996.
The Nekes collection of optical devices, prints and games charts the nature of visual perception in modern European culture at a time when optical devices such as the magic lantern evolved from instruments of natural magic to forms of entertainment. The bulk of the items date from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century (1740-1920). The collection contains rare items, such as a French camera obscura, ca. 1750, as well as popular images such as 19th-century magic lantern slides, paper silhouettes, and greeting cards with moving parts. Other items include an 18th century peepshow, prints depicting a variety of optical devices and phenomena, ca. 100 megalographs, a camera lucida, a Lorrain mirror, a zograscope, anamorphosis watercolors accompanied by a cone viewer, and ca. 20 collapsible Engelbrecht perspective theaters. Series I. Prints, includes a broad variety of illustrations used for educational and entertainment purposes. Documentary images illustrate the design of anamorphic drawings as well as the use of optical games, such as the magic lantern, various types of peepshows, the praxinoscope, and the zoetrope. A group of technological prints shows the use of the camera lucida and fictional visions of scientific progress (En l'an 2000). Paper toys have moveable or foldable parts (including games from the Imagerie d'Epinal). Illustrations used for entertainment with backlighting include a number of vues d'optique, pin-pricked prints, and polyorama slides. Series II. Cards and other small printed items, such as: Biedermeier greeting cards (with moveable parts or fold-out windows), backlit postcards of city views (by day and by night), 22 Protean prints (by William Spooner) and five polyorama discs. Also included are more than 100 18th-century megalographs (i.e. shadowgraphy figures) of historical personages and caricatures, as well as several Spanish "metamorphosis instantaneas." Seven albums with hundreds of advertising cards from Liebig Fleisch illustrate a range of themes appealing to popular audiences. Series III. Artifacts, includes optical instruments and artists' aids, such as the Lorrain mirror, a zograscope and a book-form camera obscura, used to view perspective prints. Devices used for entertainment include an English magic lantern (the Praestantia, by the Riley brothers) with slides, various examples of peepshows (ranging from the Engelbrecht theaters to some 20th-century three-dimensional paper souvenirs) and a few thaumatropes and phenakistoscope discs. A large selection of games includes montage toys, such as a myriorama by Friedrich Campe and a physionotrace, mica overlays and flip books, as well as a magnetic lottery and a polymorphoscope with a multifaceted lens. This series also includes an 18th-century anamorphosis cone and pictures, the shadowgraphy game Ombres chinoises (by L. Saussine Editeur) and two stereoscopes (a Holmes and a Brewster model) with about 80 glass stereo slides of European landscapes. Viewers for backlit illustrations include two polyorama panoptique (in medium and large format) and a foldable peepshow box for vues d'optique. The largest item is a standing wooden column stereo viewer.

Title:
Epitaphs on Hogarth [manuscript], ca. 1771-1772.
4 different epitaphs on Hogarth, of which three are by Garrick. (1) Autograph fair copy by David Garrick, titled Epitaph for Hogarth, beginning "To Shakespear Nature gave her pen," corrected to read "To Shakespear Nature gave a pen." Includes additional double alterations to the seventh line and one to the last line (alterations match an alternate version recorded by Knapp). (2) In another hand, a two stanza version by Garrick in English and Latin (corresponding to the version sent to Samuel Johnson, but without the central stanza), beginning "If thou hast Genius, Reader, stay" (Latin translation begins "Siste Gradum, Ingenii, Lector, si quid salid intuo"). (3) Copy of the final version by Garrick, titled Epitaph for Hogarth, as used on the grave, beginning "Farewell, great Painter of Mankind!" (4) Autograph letter signed from James Townley to David Garrick, dated December 22, 1771 from Suffolk Lane [London], which includes a copy of another epitaph to Hogarth, copied from the Public Ledger of November, 1764. Trusler, John, 1735-1820. Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Title:
Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of the second part of Trusler's diary. The author begins by considering the art of memoir-writing and reflecting on the public reception of the first part of his Memoirs; the rest of the volume covers a wide variety of professional, personal, social, philosophical, and anecdotal subjects. In addition to his own successes as a preacher and author and analyses of the status of these professions, he discusses issues of real estate and financial planning; warns his readers against entering into debt; explains the financial relationship between the bookselling trade and writers; and complains about the evils of the printing trade and of low-priced books. Elsewhere, he discusses his ideas about education; whether thieves possess honor; the disgraceful state of medical practice; and criticizes prevailing fashions of women's dress, comparing them unfavorably to the modesty of Quakers. He also mentions current events and a wide variety of notable personages, including the arrival in 1762 of three Cherokee chiefs to England, where they were displayed in a "raised Covered Theatre" and exhibited, with their wives, to the public, reflecting on their appearance and moral beliefs of the "savages." Other names he mentions include Henry Fielding, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, William Hogarth, Horace Walpole, and Robert Walpole. The volume also contains personal anecdotes of his two wives and children and the experience of his second wife in childbed. The manuscript is accompanied by a typed transcription.

Title:
[Notes on the Investigator]. 1755.
Bound volume containing two copies of Alan Ramsay's The investigator (no. CCCXXII, 1755) both with marginal notes written by William Hogarth.
