Civil engineer of Boston, Mass., and railroad executive. Graduated from Harvard (1834). Engineer for Loammi Baldwin, Jr. and took over his business after Baldwin's death in 1838. Superintendent of construction, Fitchburg Railroad (1843). Later served as president of Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (1851-1864).

President of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad Co. in 1861, who helped discover and aid detective Allen Pinkerton in foiling an assassination plot aimed at Abraham Lincoln on the way to his first inauguration. The attempt was to take place in Baltimore and with the railroads help a secret trip by rail was made from Harrisburg to Washington.
