Alfred Victor du Pont was the eldest son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. He joined the gunpowder firm of E.I. du Pont & Company in 1818 and was senior partner from 1834 to 1850.
Alfred Victor du Pont (1798-1856), son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont was born in Paris and came to the United States in 1800. He was educated at Mt. Airy and Dickinson Colleges. He studied chemistry at Dickinson under Thomas Cooper, a disciple of Joseph Priestly. In 1818 he joined the firm E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Upon the death of his father in 1834 he formed a new partnership with his brother-in-law, James Antoine Bidermann. In 1837 Alfred Victor du Pont became the senior partner. He retired in 1850. He was primarily interested in developing methods for improving the manufacture of black powder. He worked with Ellwood Morris, a Philadelphia engineer, evaluating the efficiency of turbines at the Du Pont mills.
Also included are an arithmetic copy book and school papers from Mt. Airy College; papers relating to the estate of his father, E.I. du Pont; papers relating to land sales in New Castle County, Del.; building plans and notes on building a barn.

Research reports, 1953-1978.
The research reports were produced by the museum beginning in 1953 for the purpose of developing and elaborating its exhibits and interpretations. They were prepared by a permanent research staff and by participants in the Hagley Fellowship Program, administered jointly with the University of Delaware, many of whom went on to distinguished careers in the history of technology and business. The reports were produced from manuscript and secondary sources at the Hagley Museum and Library. They have the advantage of collecting and condensing information on selected topics relating to the industrial history of the Brandywine Valley and providing tracings back to the original sources.

Title:
Papers, 1807-1892.
While most of his correspondence is personal, there are observations on political and military matters in letters to his brother, Samuel Francis Du Pont. Business records of Charles I. du Pont & Co. include accounts and notes and a list of employees subscribing to a fund for an injured co-worker. Other representative elements include correspondence with James J. Barclay, of Philadelphia, a friend of many years, and with Louis Paul D'Autremont, the Comte de Menou, and Edward Livingston concerning claims of the Comte de Coëtlogon and the heirs of John Law (1671-1729) to lands included in the Louisiana Purchase. Charles I. du Pont appears to have succeeded his father as agent for the French claimants in the United States, when they petitioned Congress on the subject. Livingston was a member of Congress at the time from Louisiana. Law's financial operations, which ended in the "Mississippi Bubble", included the acquisition of a vast estate in what is now Arkansas.

Title:
The P. S. du Pont Office Collection, 1749-1939.
This collection was formed by the late Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in connection with his study of company and family history. It contains elements which were selected from both company and family papers. The material was lodged in his Wilmington office for a number of years prior to his death in 1954. It was deposited with the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, Inc., in 1954 and is recorded as Accession 501 in the records of the Hagley Museum Library. Particularly elements which were readily identifiable as company archives, especially certain business books, have been transferred to the records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Series I). The remaining portion of the collection for which precise provenance could not be established, has been left intact; this residual portion is reported in this entry.

Acquisitions of Pierre S. du Pont, 1438-1921.
The papers in this collection were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont by purchase or through gift. For some years before his death he was an active collector of Du Pont materials and bought several important bodies of manuscripts from French dealers. These papers are primarily concerned with Du Pont de Nemours, the Physiocrats, the French Revolution, and the antecedents of the Du Ponts and allied families in France. Of particular interest are letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert (1652), Gaspard de Coligny (1554), Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1795), and Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1675). Papers of Gabriel Denizot (1818) describe the establishment of the Du Pont Powder Company at Eleutherian Mills. Also included are miscellaneous papers of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. Papers of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) contain notebooks on explosions at the gunpowder mills (1815-1902). Papers of Du Pont de Nemours include a copy of his essay on education in the United States entitled "Sur l'éducation nationale dans les Etats-Unis d'Amérique" n.d. This essay was written at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson during the summer of 1800. It was sent to Jefferson for correction and translation, but this process was never completed.

Henry du Pont's correspondence dates from his days as a student at Mt. Airy and at West Point. Title:
Papers, 1757-1836.
The correspondence of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours covers his entire public career - particularly his involvement with the Physiocratic movement in pre-revolutionary France. The letters from Anne-Robert Turgot represent one of the most significant parts of the collection as they relate to Du Pont de Nemours' career as a governmental official prior to the French Revolution. The collection also describes his settlement in the United States and his later diplomatic career after the fall of Napoleon. Included in the letters is the earliest known one sent by Benjamin Franklin, the first American with whom Du Pont de Nemours had any associations. There is also correspondence with Mirabeau, Napoleon, Talleyrand, Vergennes, Voltaire, and Jacques Necker. The letters from Jacques Necker describe economic conditions during the last years of the ancien régime and the process by which Louis XVI formulated the royal budget. There is also an exchange of letters between Thomas Jefferson and Du Pont de Nemours.

Papers, 1798-1861.
The papers cover a period of sixty years. As a woman of means, she was able to pursue her interests, which included education and literature. Outgoing letters (1803-1861) were written to her mother, siblings, nieces and nephews, and friends. The letters primarily discuss family matters, health, sewing, clothing, weather, and household administration, particulary the management of servants. The incoming letters (1798-1861) were written by family and friends. Letters from school friends document their interest in fashion, visits, courting, and literature. Of particular note are the exchanges with Antoinette Brevost, a member of a French refugee family who established a girl's school in Pittsburgh before going on to teach at Natchez.

Papers, 1771-1922.
The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824. The papers of Madame du Pont consist for the most part of family correspondence.
