Walpole, Horace, 1717-1797. Aedes Walpolianae, or a description of the collection of pictures at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, the seat of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Walpole Earl of Orford, 1743.
Title:
Aedes Walpolianae, or a description of the collection of pictures at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, the seat of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Walpole Earl of Orford, 1743.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of Walpole's catalogue of the works of art at Houghton Hall during Sir Robert Walpole's tenure there. The manuscript is arranged in the manner of a guided tour, beginning with "the common approach to the house," and listing the works of art by their position in the house as one moves through it, including over the chimney; over one door; the passage to the gallery; and the upper end of the coffee room. Occasionally the paintings are annotated, primarily with biographical details which accompany portraits of Walpole family members and other personages. The manuscript also occasionally describes the furnishings of the room, as in the little bedchamber, which the author mentions is wainscoted with mahogany, while the bed is of painted taffeta; and the gallery, which he declares was first intended to be a greenhouse till Sir Robert Walpole's resignation from the ministry in 1742. This volume also includes a dedication to Lord Orford from Horace Walpole dated August 24, 1743; a lengthy introduction; a sermon on painting "preachd before the Right Honourable the Earl of Orford at Houghton," dated 1742; and a poem by Rev. John Whaley titled A journey to Houghton. According to a note by Paget Toynbee, formerly laid in, the manuscript is a transcript by a professional scribe of Walpole's first draft of the Aedes Walpolianae, prior to its publication in 1747.

Much of the manuscript concerns the pieces he wrote, both published and unpublished, and those he published with the Strawberry Hill Press, as well as his reactions to the reviews he received. He also includes anecdotes concerning his attack by highwaymen in 1749; the family quarrel with his uncle Horace Walpole; and his disagreements with David Hume and Voltaire.

Trusler, John, 1735-1820. Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Title:
Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of the second part of Trusler's diary. The author begins by considering the art of memoir-writing and reflecting on the public reception of the first part of his Memoirs; the rest of the volume covers a wide variety of professional, personal, social, philosophical, and anecdotal subjects. In addition to his own successes as a preacher and author and analyses of the status of these professions, he discusses issues of real estate and financial planning; warns his readers against entering into debt; explains the financial relationship between the bookselling trade and writers; and complains about the evils of the printing trade and of low-priced books. Elsewhere, he discusses his ideas about education; whether thieves possess honor; the disgraceful state of medical practice; and criticizes prevailing fashions of women's dress, comparing them unfavorably to the modesty of Quakers. He also mentions current events and a wide variety of notable personages, including the arrival in 1762 of three Cherokee chiefs to England, where they were displayed in a "raised Covered Theatre" and exhibited, with their wives, to the public, reflecting on their appearance and moral beliefs of the "savages." Other names he mentions include Henry Fielding, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, William Hogarth, Horace Walpole, and Robert Walpole. The volume also contains personal anecdotes of his two wives and children and the experience of his second wife in childbed. The manuscript is accompanied by a typed transcription.

Macaulay, Thomas Babington Macaulay, Baron, 1800-1859. Walpole's letters to Sir Horace Mann, 1833.
Title:
Walpole's letters to Sir Horace Mann, 1833.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a draft, with many corrections, of an essay on Walpole's character and writing style, particularly as extrapolated from the publication of his letters to Horace Mann in 1833. Though the author criticizes Walpole's artifices and inconsistencies, he expresses admiration for Walpole's ability to amuse his reader. He also acknowledges the contribution to English history which the letters provide, as they cover the last 20 years of the reign of George II, and goes on to analyze the political career of Sir Robert Walpole during this period. The manuscript also contains a note by Macvey Napier which reads, "Keep the Ms as clean as possible." Bound in with the manuscript are two engravings of Macaulay and one of Horace Walpole; an envelope with Macaulay's signature, dated 1833 and addressed to Macvey Napier; a letter from Napier praising the manuscript draft of Macaulay's essay; and a printed notice of the death of Napier.

Title:
20 letters to Charlotte, Lady Sundon ; 4 letters to Lady Sundon from Lord Hervey ; 1 unsigned letter, 1730-1734.
Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of copies of 20 letters from Alured Clarke to Charlotte, Lady Sundon, followed by copies of 4 letters to her from Lord John Hervey adn one letter from an unsigned hand. Many of the letters from Clarke concern his patronage of the poet Stephen Duck, in which he discusses his anxiety about exposing Duck to the cruelty of Alexander Pope and "the Dunciad Club," his negotiations with various booksellers and publishers on Duck's behalf, and his high hopes for Duck's poetry after the death of Duck's wife. He also describes books on religion, history, and moral philosophy that he has read; witnesses a presentation of "Indians" to the Queen; and imparts various religious and political news, including Quaker activities. The letters from Hervey consist primarily of descriptions of his own routine social activities as well as those of such notables as the King, Queen, and Duke of Grafton, though he also writes with surprise that Stanislaus has been chosen King of Poland and reports that Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Salisbury, is on the brink of being promoted to the bishopric of Winchester, despite his disagreements with Sir Robert Walpole. An unsigned letter dated 1734, sent "by a private hand," discusses the controversial nomination of Thomas Rundle to the see of Gloucester.

Autograph album, 1667-1823.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, with some annotations in a later hand, of several hundred signatures of members of Parliament and other persons in serving in government offices, pasted, tipped, and laid in. Many of the signatures appear at the bottom of bills, receipts, legal documents, and business letters; most of the entries preserve only fragments of the documents on which the signatures originally appeared. Many documents are receipts for orders of money for use for the Navy from the Treasurer of the Ordnance, or other orders regarding public monies. Although the volume includes signatures from the 17th century, most of the signatures are dated in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The collection includes the signatures of Robert Walpole; George Lyttelton; Francis Conyngham; George Grenville; Henry Edward Bunbury; Thomas Pelham; Henry Fox; Sidney Herbert; Horatio Walpole; Horace Walpole; and William Stanhope. The volume also includes several dozen examples of government seals, pasted in and labeled.

An account of the paintings at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, the seat of the right honble Sr Robt .Walpole, 1749 / by the Revd Mr Morgan Powell MA. SGSS.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of Powell's modified version of Horace Walpole's work, which lists and describes the works of art at Houghton Hall during Sir Robert Walpole's tenure there. The manuscript is arranged in the manner of a guided tour, beginning with "the common approach to the house," and listing the works of art by their position in the house as one moves through it, including over the chimney; over one door; the passage to the gallery; and the upper end of the coffee room. Occasionally the paintings are annotated, primarily biographical details which accompany portraits of Walpole family members and other personages. The manuscript also occasionally describes the furnishings of the room, as in the little bedchamber, which the author mentions is wainscoted with mahogany, while the bed is of painted taffeta; and the gallery, which Powell declares was first intended to be a greenhouse till Sir Robert Walpole's resignation from the ministry in 1742.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a history of the Anglo-Spanish War, the War of Austrian Succession, and the civil war in Great Britain. The author analyzes the popular opinions of leaders such as Robert Walpole and Prince William, Duke of Cumberland; Parliamentary decisions; and military actions both in Great Britain as well as in Europe. He records verses composed at Cumberland's triumphant arrival at St. James in 1746; and, at the end of the volume, provides a list of "the attainted, the Excepted, the forfeited, and the killed, And some account of the principle noblemen and gentlemen that had been concerned in the Rebellion." The work is prefaced by an explanation that the author aims for no more than, for his own private use, to glean such information as he could from "the best authorities to which I had access" and "to guess at the springs of action."

Title:
Newspaper clippings, circa 1764-1789.
A collection of over one hundred newspaper clippings, many annotated in Walpole's hand with the date and occasional futher notes and names. Most of the cuttings are reports of political activities, including Parliamentary debates and committees, as well as foreign affairs. Other items on public figures include a biography of Henry Seymour Conway and a report of the arrival in Antigua of Sir Ralph Payne in 1772. The collection also contains numerous verses, both serious and satirical, including a poetic epitaph on Thomas Winnington by Sir Charles Hanbury Williams; an anonymous satirical poem on George III; and a song from the Morning Herald dated 1788 which the clipping attributes to Horace Walpole, but which is annotated in Walpole's hand, "not by me H.W." Several clippings refer to religious unrest, including articles speaking against Popery and reporting on the arraignment of Lord George Gordon in 1781 for instigating anti-Catholic riots. Many other articles concern American affairs, such as a record of the number of men killed in the British service by the general returns of musters in New York; an article in the Public Advertiser arguing about the use of Indians in the wars of America in 1777; and a clipping of the American Declaration of Independence, published in the Public Advertiser in 1776. The collection also contains several clippings concerning the Houghton estate, including the sale of Sir Robert Walpole's lands in Devon and Norfolk, dated by Walpole; and pictures formerly at Houghton which were sold to the Empress of Russia in 1782.
