Autograph letters from Stephen Poyntz to Thomas Townshend, concerning not only Poyntz's political and diplomatic activities in England, Sweden, and France, but also containing court gossip and personal news. Later letters from France contain confidential information on the negotiations with F rance and Spain leading to the Treaty of Seville. Several letters mention the movements of Sir Robert Walpole, including one detailing the sentiments of Walpole towards Thomas Townshend. The letters also mention his ailing health as well as that of his wife; his difficulties in christening a child with royal godparents; the efforts of William Stanhope, Earl Harrington, to gain a peerage; and other gossip about the members of the court. The collection also contains 2 letters from Poyntz to Charles, Viscount Townshend; a draft of a letter from Thomas Townshend to Poyntz; a letter from Viscount Townshend to King George II, sending one of Poyntz's letters for perusal; and a Latin poem in Poyntz's hand.
