Edward Harley (c. 1699-1755), 3rd Earl of Oxford and Earl of Mortimer, and Baron Harley of Wigmore, was the son of Edward Harley, of Eywood, in Titley, Herefordshire, and Sarah, third daughter of Thomas Foley, of Whitley, Herefordshire. He was educated at Westminster, and Christ Church, Oxford (M.A.; D.C.L., 1737), and succeeded to the peerage on 16 June 1741. He was Tory M.P. for Herefordshire, 1721-1741; High Steward of Hereford, 1746; and Harleian Trustee of the British Museum, from 1753 until his death. Harley died at Bath on 11 April 1755, and was buried at Brampton.
