Catherine Talbot was the only child of the Rev. Edward Talbot, who died before she was born. She was educated in the household of Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, where she was taught not only the Scriptures, but languages and astronomy. Talbot was a friend of Samuel Richardson and Elizabeth Carter, whom she persuaded to translate Epictetus. Thomas Secker (1693-1768) was born at Sibthorpe, Nottinghamshire. He was educated under Samuel Jones (c. 1680-1719), and studied medicine in London and Paris, 1716-1720 (M.D., Leyden, 1721). He graduated at Exeter College, Oxford, in 1721, and was ordained deacon in 1722, and priest in 1723.
