Thomas Jones was born in Caernarfon in 1851. His father, David Jones, quarryman, died when Thomas was a young lad, and thus, to help his mother, he began work as a runner for the local post office. By 1881, he had become a Clerk at Caernarfon Post Office and was later promoted to Postmaster in Caernarfon and later in North Shields, Northumberland.

He was an avid collector of books with a very substantial library consisting of around 1,700 volumes. On 1 January 1913, living at Brynydre, Llanbeblig, he started to compile a catalogue of all his books.

He died in 1918 of the Spanish Flu. Many of his books were offered to and accepted by the University College of North Wales, whilst the rest went astray.

Thomas Jones is the great-grandfather of Gerald Morgan, the Welsh historian.
