Samuel Wylie Crawford was an army surgeon and a Union general in the Civil War.

Brigadier General and U.S. Army surgeon in Civil War, and author of Genesis of the Civil War (published in 1887); native of Pennsylvania; graduated, 1846, from University of Pennsylvania, after which he studied medicine; in 1851 became an assistant surgeon in the U.S. army and served in various forts in the southwest, principally in Texas; in 1860, Crawford was stationed at Fort Moultrie and later at Fort Sumter (at Charleston, S.C.), where he commanded a battery during the bombardment from Confederate forces; retired from military service in 1873.

Crawford, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and its medical school, entered the US Army as a surgeon. In 1861 he moved to the infantry and served there until he retired in 1873. At the time of the Battle of Gettysburg Crawford was in command of the Pennsylvania Reserves Division.
