Fred R. Harris was elected as a Democrat from Oklahoma in 1964 to fill a Senate vacancy. He was re-elected in 1966 and served until 1973. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976. While in the Senate, Harris served on the following committees: Government Operations, Public Works, Finance, and the Select Committeeon Small Business. He is a Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico.
