Bellmon, born near Tonkawa, Okla. in 1921, graduated from Oklahoma A & M College in 1942 with a degree in agriculture. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was elected Oklahoma's first Republican governor (1963-1967), U.S. Senator (1969-1980), and to a second gubernatorial term (1987-1991). He has taught at Oklahoma City University, Central State University (now the University of Central Oklahoma), the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University.
