Two official letterbooks, chiefly 1814-1828, containing copies of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, accounts, and reports, relating to the military career and activities of Major-General Brown, especially his participation in various battles of the War of 1812 around Niagara, Fort Erie, and Lake Ontario; and as commander of the Division of the North, with headquarters at Brownville, N.Y. Includes material on general military matters, troop movements, army reorganization, establishment of forts and other military construction, and relations with the Indians, namely a "Memorandum of the Tribes of Indians in the North-West...." with various statistics on the tribes and their ways of life. A third volume entitled "Memorandum of occurrences and some important facts attending the Campaign on the Niagara in 1814" contains memoranda and copies of correspondence relating to the Battle of Lundy's Lane in which Brown figured prominently. Correspondents include John Armstrong, James Barbour, John C. Calhoun, Isaac Chauncey, De Witt Clinton, William Harris Crawford, Alexander James Dallas, Edmund Pendleton Gaines, George Graham, George Izard, Andrew Jackson, Alexander Macomb, James Monroe, Daniel Parker, and Winfield Scott.

The collection consists of more than 1,100 letters, clippings, reprints, and other documents amassed by John Sanford Barnes and others to, from, and about notable persons including many with named series in the Naval History Society Collection (e.g., William Bainbridge, John Barry , French E. Chadwick, Gustavus Conyngham, Gustavus Vasa Fox, Caspar F. Goodrich, Isaac Hull, John Paul Jones, Richard Worsam Meade 3rd, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Henry A. Wise). Highlights of the series include documents signed by Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison; others signed by John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, Richard Henry Dana, David Farragut, Robert Fulton, John Hancock, Rufus King, Seth Low, Robert Morris, and Matthew C. Perry; and a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair removed after his death and sent by Robert Todd Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox at the latter's request. Among David Porter's letters are cartoons and drawings by him, including one of animal-headed naval officers listening to explanations of the value of steam-powered vessels, which complement others in the Naval History Society's Fox collection. The William Smith folder includes a map of an attack on Whampoa, China, in 1870. It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

Beginning with the copy of a letter dated Williamsville, April 17, 1814, details of forces are given and an attack on Fort Erie urged, followed by all the correspondence between General Jacob Brown, Com. Chauncey, Gaines, Scott, etc., leading up to the capture of Fort Erie. Brown's announcement of the victory over Gen. Riall at Chippewa is found under date of July 6, 1814, and the defeat of Gen. Drummond with a superior force (July 25) at the Battle of Lundy's Lane is found under date of July 29th in a communication by his aide, who says Gen. Brown is suffering from wounds received there. The last entry is dated August 20, 1814.

The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824. The papers of Madame du Pont consist for the most part of family correspondence.

Papers of William Whipple, judge, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Revolutionary military and political leader, who served in the Continental Congress (1776-1779), commanded New Hampshire militia in the Saratoga and Rhode Island campaigns, and was a close ally of Langdon, include correspondence, U.S. Congressional documents, and military and financial papers. The Elwyn family and other papers consist chiefly of letters to John Langdon's daughter, Elizabeth (Langdon) Elwyn, of Portsmouth and later Philadelphia, Pa., many from her children, but also from naval commander Isaac Chauncey, editor Charles King, and lawyer Timothy Upham, who managed her New Hampshire properties; papers of her husband, Thomas Elwyn, lawyer, including records of the John Moffatt estate and the subsequent legal case; some papers of the Elwyn children: Alfred W., John L., Thomas O., and William O., and some of their descendants, including members of the Stone family; 16 letters to Peter Livius; and a few papers of Tobias Langdon and other Langdon family members.

Collection of letters received by the Commanding Officer of the Philadelphia Navy Yard, sent by the U.S. Navy Department, Board of Navy Commissioners, including 59 signed by John Rodgers, 58 by Isaac Chauncey, 1 by A.P. Upshur and 61 by Lewis Warrington. The letters concern the refitting, outfitting and building of ships at the yard, and while many refer to enclosures no longer with the letter, some include specifications and prices for timber, masts, sails, ordnance, etc. Some ships mentioned are the Pennsylvania, the Warren, the Raritan and the Enterprise.
