Organizational History
In 1857 the San Francisco Board of Education established an evening school for current and prospective teachers in the city. The school became know as the Minns' Evening Normal School, named after the principal, Washington Minns. In 1862, the California State Legislature formally established Minns' school as the first California State Normal School. The school remained in San Francisco until the California State Legislature voted to move the Normal School to San José and provided the funds to construct a new building on Washington Square in San José. The State Normal School moved into temporary quarters in San José in 1871, and moved into the new building prior to the fall term in 1872.
In the early hours of February 10, 1880, a fire destroyed the Normal School building, which was regarded as one of the most significant wood buildings in the state, and cost approximately $285,000 to build. In the interim, classes moved to the high school building located on Santa Clara Street. Following the fire, there was a failed attempt to move the school to Los Angeles. As a compromise, the Branch State Normal School in Los Angeles was established, which eventually became the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The California State Legislature authorized $200,000 to construct a new building on the same site, which was completed in 1881, and was commonly referred to as the Second State Normal School.
In 1887 the California State Normal School was renamed the San José State Normal School, after the California State Legislature formally established a normal school in Chico and gave the Los Angeles Branch Normal School its independence.
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 caused major damage throughout the San Francisco Bay area. Although the San José State Normal School building initially appeared to be only lightly damaged by the quake, further inspection showed sufficient structural damage to declare it unsafe. The building was demolished, and construction began on a quadrangle-type structure similar to the quad at Stanford University. This building, with its signature tower, was completed in 1910.
In 1921 the various State Normal Schools were renamed State Teachers Colleges, reflecting the increased needs and curriculum requirements for the education of teachers. That same year, the San José Junior College was established, sharing the facilities and staff of the San José State Teachers College. The college began offering education-related bachelor's degrees at this time and the first degrees were conferred in 1923. In 1928 the college offered general academic bachelor's degrees, and formalized the merger of the junior college with the teachers college. The institution transformed from a vocational school to that of a full-fledged academic institution offering four year degrees. This change paved the way for a more formal curriculum and new programs, which led to another name change in 1935, when the California State Legislature renamed the San José State Teachers College to the San José State College.
In 1972 the school was renamed California State University, San José, a change long overdue since the institution had been providing university-level curriculum and degree programs for several decades. This change met fairly broad opposition from students, alumni, and faculty, since the institution had long been known as San José State. Their persistence paid off, and in 1974, the school was renamed San José State University.

Organizational History
In 1857 the San Francisco Board of Education established Minns' Evening Normal School for current and prospective teachers in the city. Named after its principal, George W. Minns, the institution was formally established as the first California State Normal School by the State Legislature in 1862. A decade later, the Legislature voted to move the Normal School to San José, and the school relocated to its new home on Washington Square prior to the fall term of 1872. After a fire destroyed the Normal School building in 1880, the Legislature authorized $200,000 to construct a new building on the same site. Completed in 1881, the building was commonly referred to as the Second State Normal School. After several names and curriculum changes, Minns' Normal School is now San José State University, offering more than 134 bachelor's and master's degrees with 110 concentrations, and is recognized as one of the top public universities granting such degrees in the West.
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at San José State University is the largest accredited library and information science program in the world. The school first began offering a graduate degree in Library Science in 1954. Accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) in 1969 and again in June 2007, it is the only ALA accredited program in the 23-campus California State University system.
The SLIS curriculum has expanded significantly over the past 50 years and the school prides itself on pioneering new ways to educate information professionals, such as fostering global partnerships, creating leadership programs, preparing students to serve diverse communities, embedding technology into their programs, offering a wide range of internships, and building a fully online degree program. The programs include a Gateway Ph.D. Program with Queensland University, an Executive MLIS program, a Master's Degree in Archives and Records Administration (MARA), and standard programs that provide training in public, school, academic, and special libraries, as well as non-traditional settings.

Title:
South Bay second wave feminist oral history project , 2006-2010 (bulk 2006).
The South Bay Second Wave Feminist Oral History Project was funded by a California State University research grant from 2005-2006. This oral history project resulted in thirteen digital recordings and complete transcriptions documenting the experiences of women in politics in San José, California and Santa Clara County. These pioneering women worked directly and indirectly for equal rights and equal participation in the political process. Some of them played a key role as the first recognized political figures in San José and the larger Bay Area, while others worked as activists and lobbyists for the Equal Rights Amendment, the environment, and civil rights, including outlawing marital and date rape, and reproductive rights. Each narrator was asked to reflect on her political and social experiences from the 1960s to the present, with the objective to document women's experience through the political process, as politicians, and as non-governmental lobbyists and activists. This project provides a deeper understanding of the important role that women have played in Bay Area politics, and will advance historical understanding of the important events, activities, and resulting policies that transformed the political landscape and opened up new opportunities for women, despite the failure to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The South Bay Second Wave Feminist Oral History Project, 2006-2010 (bulk 2006), consists of thirteen digital recordings on CD-ROMs and complete transcriptions documenting the experiences of women in politics in San José and Santa Clara County. The interviewees include: Blanca Alvarado, Joan Goddard, Susan Hammer, Janet Gray Hayes, Linda J. LeZotte, Dianne McKenna, Madison Nguyen, Sally Reed, Lu Ryden, Leona Egeland Siadek, Lee Sturtevant, Susanne Wilson, and Zoe Lofgren. This collection is arranged into a single series: Series I. Civilian Conservation Corps collection, 1933-1997 (bulk 1933-1942)
The Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) collection, 1933-1997 (bulk 1933-1942) documents the work relief program estabilished by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) during the New Deal Era. The CCC employed young men between the ages of 18 to 24 to provide manual labor related to conservation of National Parks and resource management. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was created in 1933 as one of the first programs headed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) to alleviate youth unemployment during the Great Depression. Members of the CCC became known as FDR's "Tree Army", were recruited by the Department of Labor to revitalize the nation's forests and parks by planting trees, setting up state parks, and building roads that connected parks. The young men were able to stay employed during the Great Depression by contributing to a large-scale conservation program which involved every U.S. State. This collection focuses in particular on Company 739, the Almaden Camp in San Jose, Calif. also called the Mount Madonna Camp. The records consist of photographs, newspaper articles, original newspapers, memorabilia, oral history cassette tapes, memorial calendars, and alumni association publications. The collection is arranged into two series: Series I. Civilian Conservation Corps memorabilia, 1933-1997; and Series II. Original Civilian Conservation Corps newspapers, 1934-1935

San José State University Oral History Project . Oral history interviews of the San José State University Oral History Project , 2005-2006.
Title:
Oral history interviews of the San José State University Oral History Project , 2005-2006.
This Oral History Project documents the history of San José State University (SJSU) from 1952 to the present. The interviews cover a wide spectrum of subjects from student life, faculty and university governance, policymaking, capital campaigns, and changes in higher education in California. Collectively these interviews document the sweeping social, political and economic changes that shaped American society and which thereby transformed academic life and culture at SJSU. The post-war years offered great prosperity and new opportunities for college students in California. The impact of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam war, forever changed academics and influenced the development of new programs and disciplines, including the formation of New College (1968-1980), an experimental interdisciplinary school, and new majors in African American Studies, Chicano Studies, Asian American Studies, and Women Studies. Changes in curriculum and the diversity of the student body and faculty led to a watershed that moved the institution forward from a small college to a major metropolitan university. The interviews and in particular, the account of Reverend Benton White, professor of religious studies, present some of the challenges the university faced in addressing civil rights on campus and in society. Many of the themes from these interviews shed light on student and faculty strikes during the Vietnam war, the Tommy Smith and John Carlos 1968 Olympics controversy, the development of an ombudsman position to address racial discrimination and other social justice issues on campus. The tumult of the civil rights movement and anti-war demonstrations on campus, mirrored other college and university experiences across the United States, yet laid the foundation for a more democratic and diverse institution. This collection contains audio tapes and transcripts documenting the experiences of key administrators and faculty from San José State University. The oral histories described, reflect the changes in campus governance, curriculum and student life from 1952 to the present. The interviewees included: Wanda Blockhus, Jack Douglas, Ruth Jaffe, Lester Lange, Mary Male, Brett Melendy, Sam Milioto, George Moore, James Noah, Lela Nobel, Theodore Norton, Jay Pinson, Wiggsy Sivertsen, James Walsh, Reverend Benton White and Jo Bell Whitlach.

Title:
Santa Clara Center for Occupational Health (SCCOSH) and Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) collection, 1976-2002 (bulk 1982-1995)
The Santa Clara Center for Occupational Health (SCCOSH) and Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition (SVTC) collection, 1976-2002 (bulk 1982-1995), document the history of SCCOSH and SVTC. SCCOSH grew from the efforts of three women's health and labor rights organizers, Robin Baker, Amanda Hawes, and Pat Lamborn, who had come to focus on the Valley's largely unrepresented working-class minorities in the late 1970s. SCCOSH organized various campaigns in the fields of workers' rights advocacy and occupational safety and health training, particularly within the Silicon Valley electronics industries. At the outset, SCCOSH envisioned itself as representing three constituencies: local labor unions and labor councils, ill and injured workers, and community residents affected by wildfire industrial development of the Santa Clara Valley since the mid-1970s. The Silicon Valley Toxic Coalition (SVTC) developed from a SCCOSH project into a wide-ranging, independent nonprofit organization founded by Ted Smith (1945-), attorney and activist in 1982 in response to the suspicion that leaks at manufacturing sites for IBM and Fairchild Electronics were causing health issues in nearby Silicon Valley homes. The SVTC is a San José, California-based research and advocacy group that promotes safe environmental practices in the high tech industry. The records of SCCOSH and SVTC consist of administrative files, correspondence, research, publications, official reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, notes, congressional testimony, and legislative material concerning these organizations and their mission to reduce toxins and hazardous waste in the Silicon Valley. This collection is arranged into 15 series: Series I: SCCOSH, activism, 1976-2002; Series II: SCCOSH, Workplace hazard files, 1978-1999; Series III: SCCOSH, administrative files, 1978-2001; Series IV: SCCOSH, legal cases, 1980-1998; Series V: SVTC, model hazardous materials storage, 1981-1986; Series VI: SVTC, groundwater cleanup, 1981-1997; Series VII: SVTC, toxic gas model ordinance, 1982-1997; Series VIII: SVTC, administrative files, 1982-1999; Series IX: SVTC, Founder Ted Smith, 1983-1995; Series X: SVTC, United Technologies Corporation, 1984-1995; Series XI: SVTC, toxics coordinating project, 1985-1990; Series XII: SVTC, Tanner Bill, 1986-1991; Series XIII: SVTC, Stanford University/biotechnology activism, 1987-1991; Series XIV: SVTC, Earth Day, 1987-1993; and Series XV: Newspaper articles, 1987-1997.
