Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records, 1934-2003 and undated
Title:
Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records, 1934-2003 and undated
Bates Worldwide advertising agency ( ) was established in 1940 by former executives of the Benton & Bowles agency. It grew to become one of the largest agencies in the U.S. until its demise in 2003. Bates began as a simple proprietorship, but as the company grew its organizational structure took on different forms: a partnership, then a corporation before becoming a publicly traded transnational entity, and finally becoming a subsidiary in a global holding company. From the 1970s on, Bates' growth and international expansion was fueled by a long series of mergers, partnerships and acquisitions that continued until the company was itself acquired, first by the Saatchi & Saatchi and later by the WPP Group. Materials in the collection relate to Bates' permutations into a variety of corporate entities, including Ted Bates & Co., Ted Bates, Inc., Backer Spielvogel Bates, and Bates Worldwide, Inc., along with its subsidiaries (such as Campbell-Mithun and Kobs and Draft) and parent organizations (Cordiant Communications Group, Saatchi & Saatchi). Thus, the collection provides a window into the larger corporate culture of mergers, consolidations, acquisitions and takeovers that led to the formation of giant transnational advertising conglomerates and marked a profound shift in the landscape of the advertising industry during the late 20th century. Bates The Bates Worldwide, Inc. Records spans the years 1934-2003 and includes correspondence, corporate policy manuals, photographs, publications, graphic designs, print advertisements, electronic records and videocassettes that document the activities of this major global advertising agency over the course of its corporate life. Bates built its early reputation as an advertising agency with a particular talent for promoting pharmaceutical products (Carter's Pills, Anacin analgesics) and common household goods (Mars candies, Wonder bread, Palmolive soap, Colgate dental cream). Advertising policies developed around a philosophy Bates called the Unique Selling Proposition (USP), which informed an imperative to identify and promote a single, unique and compelling reason for consumers to use any given product or service. As the company grew into a global business, USP evolved into more complex forms, including the Bates Brand Wheel. Major clients included Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., Carter-Wallace Corporation, Hyundai America, the Joint Recruiting Advertising Program of the combined U.S. Armed Services, M&M/Mars Inc., Miller Brewing Company, Pfizer, the U.S. Navy and Wendy's International. There is also some information on the company's founder, Ted Bates, as well as on Rosser Reeves, Bates' first copy writer and the chief architect of the USP concept.

Hull, Warren, 1903-1974. Vox pop collection.
Title:
Parks Johnson collection on Vox Pop
Vox Pop was a radio program of interviews, quizzes, and human-interest features heard from the early 1930s to the late 1940s. (Vox Pop is a shortened form of the Latin phrase "vox populi," which means the "voice of the people.") The program, originally called Sidewalk Interviews, began on local radio in Houston in 1932. KTRH advertising salesmen Parks Johnson and Jerry Belcher went out onto the street with portable microphones and asked people their opinions on a variety of topics. The spontaneity of the show proved popular with listeners. In 1935, Vox Pop became a national program on the NBC network, broadcasting from different locations around New York City. In 1939, the show was broadcast from the New York World's Fair and was one of the first televised programs. Vox Pop participated extensively in the war effort, traveling up to 1,000 miles per week throughout the United States, visiting military bases, military schools, factories, and showcasing different communities on the home front. The show traveled to 45 states, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, France, and England. The format of the show changed over the years. From a sidewalk interview program, Vox Pop soon became a straight quiz show. The program later combined quiz questions with interviews featuring movie stars, celebrities, sports figures, politicians, and other people in the news. Eventually, the quiz show structure was dropped entirely, and the program centered around one human interest story with guests lined up in advance. Parks Johnson was one of the hosts throughout the life of the radio program. Jerry Belcher left the show in 1936 and was replaced by Wally Butterworth, a well-known radio announcer. Butterworth hosted the show with Parks from 1936 until 1942, then was replaced by Warren Hull, an actor and former emcee of radio's Your Hit Parade. This team stayed together until Vox Pop went off the air in 1948. Vox Pop broadcast a total of 1,014 regular programs and 500 special programs. The show moved from NBC to CBS in late 1939 and jumped networks again in 1947 to ABC. The last program aired on May 19, 1948. There was some discussion as late as 1964 to televise Vox Pop, but nothing was ever produced.

Lippincott Mercer (A Division of Mercer Management Consulting, Inc.). Records, 1956-2004.
Title:
Records, 1956-2004.
The records consist of a set of the company's magazine, DESIGN SENSE. Although missing four numbers, it is the most complete set extant. Beginning with No. 6, each issue was identified in a continuous number sequence, and the majority had a single theme and title. The title of the serial was changed to SENSE with No. 59. The magazine was circulated to actual and prospective clients and contained short articles on marketing and design trends along with case studies derived from the firm's practice. As a publicity vehicle, the magazine's coverage tends to be broad rather than deep when it comes to describing the firm's actual work. That is, it covers many of Lippincott & Margulies's major clients, but lacks the detail that would have been found in actual design studies and presentations. However, the magazine is copiously illustrated with examples of the firm's designs for logos, signage, packaging, store displays, and the interiors of theme and fast food restaurants. Of particular note is their work with S.C. Johnson & Son (temporarily "branded" by them as Johnson's Wax), including the design of its pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Apart from the case studies, there are many articles of a general nature charting the changes in the consumer economy over the last half of the twentieth century, including the emergence of a separate youth market, the habits of women shoppers, growing globalization of markets, and the role of corporate image in the volatile world of mergers and divestitures.
