George Herman Nicholson collection, 1883-1967.

Diaries, 1909-1964, noting financial expenditures, payments, weather conditions, and business & personal activities. Early entries in these diaries contain accounts of wages, commissions, tips, and freight payments while George Nicholson was an employee of the American Express Company. Once he was elected to Brotherhood of Railway Clerks office, he recorded lodge information including names & addresses of members, officers, organizational activities, trips made for the Brotherhood, negotiations with the government regarding control of railroads, notes on grievances, secret signals for messages & identification between union & railway men, daily appointments, and information concerning his retirement. There is also a volume containing names of officers or members of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks in Missouri, Kansas, & Oklahoma and an autobiographical sketch written by Nicholson about his life's work. The collection includes a reminiscence written by his niece, Esther Aspelin Hogle, that contains a family history including their residence in Geary County, Kan.
