Herman Melville (b. Aug. 1, 1819, NY, NY–d. Sept. 28, 1891, NY, NY) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. His best known works include Typee (1846) and his whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851). His writing draws on his experience at sea as a common sailor, exploration of literature and philosophy, and engagement in the contradictions of American society in a period of rapid change. He developed a complex, baroque style; the vocabulary is rich and original, a strong sense of rhythm infuses the elaborate sentences, the imagery is often mystical or ironic, and the abundance of allusion extends to biblical scripture, myth, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts.
Melville was born in New York City, the third child of a merchant in French dry goods and his wife. He briefly became a schoolteacher before he took to sea in 1839 as a sailor on a merchant ship. In 1840, he signed aboard the whaler Acushnet for his first whaling voyage but jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands. He returned to Boston in 1844 after further adventures. His first book was Typee (1846), a highly romanticized account of his life among Polynesians. It became such a best-seller that he wrote the sequel Omoo (1847). These successes gave him the financial basis to marry Elizabeth Shaw, daughter of a prominent Boston family, but the success proved hard to sustain. His first novel that was not based on his own experiences was Mardi (1849), a sea narrative that develops into a philosophical allegory—but it was not well received. He received warmer reviews for Redburn (1849), a story of life on a merchant ship, and his 1850 description of the harsh life aboard a man-of-war in White-Jacket, but they did not provide financial security.
In August 1850, Melville moved his growing family to Arrowhead, a farm in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he established a profound but short-lived friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, to whom he dedicated Moby-Dick. This novel was another commercial failure, published to mixed reviews. Melville's career as a popular author effectively ended with the cool reception of Pierre (1852), in part a satirical portrait of the literary culture at the time. His Revolutionary War novel Israel Potter appeared in 1855. From 1853 to 1856, Melville published short fiction in magazines, most notably "Bartleby, the Scrivener" (1853), "The Encantadas" (1854), and "Benito Cereno" (1855). These and three other stories were collected in 1856 as The Piazza Tales. The Confidence-Man (1857) was the last prose work that he published. He moved to New York to take a position as Customs Inspector and turned to poetry. Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War (1866) was his poetic reflection on the moral questions of the American Civil War.

Hawthorne family. Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
Title:
Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
The papers afford glimpses into the social and private lives of some of the Hawthorne family. Like others of her time and circumstances, Sophia Hawthorne devoted generous amounts of time to correspondence and journal-keeping; her surviving papers provide a rich reflection of life in 19th-century Concord, in Cuba, and later in England and Europe during Hawthorne's tenure as Consul at Liverpool. Included are letters, verse, journals, and notes relating to the family and milieu of Nathaniel Hawthorne and of the men and women of the American literary renaissance and of the Transcendentalist movement. Virtually all of the letters of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop were written to Clifford Smyth, a literary editor and historian, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix, Rose's niece; Rose dearly loved Beatrix and her family. Sent from Rosary Hill Home between 1913 and 1926, the year Rose died, the letters illustrate some of the familial concerns of Rose, who was by then Mother Alphonsa: she was for example, worried about her brother, Julian, and she remained committed to preserving her parents' memory. Also included are circa 450 pages of holograph manuscripts which, though undated, can be placed as pre-1900. The manuscripts consist of complete drafts of short stories, verse, and substantial fragments of several novels. These manuscripts seem not to have been previously published. Also present are two other items of interest: a copybook dated 1858, when Rose was seven, with penmanship exercises and numerous poems, and a holograph journal from 1873, when she was 22 years old. Of Julian Hawthorne's letters, almost all were written to Julian's son-in-law, Clifford Smyth, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix (Julian's daughter). Three items are childhood notes, written in pencil, two to Julian's aunt Elizabeth Palmer Peabody; the other to his maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Peabody. Also included are Hawthorne family memorabilia and photographs, and manuscript papers of actress Anna Cora Mowatt.

ALS : New York, N.Y., to Sophia Van Matre, Cincinnati, 1863 Dec. 10.
In response to a request for a donation of autographs from his old letters to be auctioned at the Great Western Sanitary Fair in Cincinnati, Melville replies that he destroys most of his letters, and those that he has would not be suitable. Sophia was the daughter of Mrs. Daniel Van Matre, a member of the Fruits and Flowers Committee for the Fair. She had apparently met Melville several years before through his friend Sarah Morewood.

Moser, Barry. Papers, 1932-2000.
Title:
Papers, 1932-2000.
Papers contain correspondence, art work, woodcuts, and illustrated books in all stages of manufacture from typescript to finished copy. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically and contains both professional and personal letters, mostly for the years 1970-1979. Correspondence related to a specific work is filed with those works. The works are arranged alphabetically in two groups, regular and oversized. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" will be found in both the regular and oversized works, and The Aeneid and Inferno are in oversized boxes only. The works range in size and complexity from the short typescript for Homage to Mondrian to the boxes of woodblocks and printed material for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and the folders of correspondence and reference material for "Moby Dick". Of interest is the Moby Dick correspondence, which displays the difficulties, including legal action, of the cross-country collaboration between Moser as illustrator and Andrew Hoyem as designer and publisher. The woodblocks fall into three groups: first, a group arranged chronologically and pictured in the woodblock catalog (located in box 5); second, the blocks from Alice's adventures in Wonderland, which are filed by the numbers of the pages on which the prints appear in the book; and third, eighteen blocks which are uncatalogued and unnumbered. [No prints may be pressed from the wood cuts.] The following woodblocks appear in the catalog, but are not included in this collection: 71H, 71I, 73D, 76A2, 78J, 78Q, 78R, 78X, 79T, 79V. A box list addendum (boxes 85-137) was added to the collection in 2008 and includes a variety of materials both professional and personal. Professional papers include illustrations, photographs, book jackets, woodcuts, calligraphy, drafts of works, dummy copies, notes, prints, contracts, correspondence with publishing companies, invitations to speaking engagements, copies of speeches, and other professional material related to the Pennyroyal Press and Moser's commissions. Projects include, but are not limited to, Master Richard's bestiary of love and response, Dante's Divine comedy, the Bible, The Guild Shakespeare, The wizard of Oz, Huckleberry Finn, Lewis Carroll's Alice's adventures in Wonderland and Through the looking glass. Personal papers can be found throughout the addendum, and include correspondence, bills, invitations, newspaper and magazine articles on Moser, and wedding preparations. Includes correspondence regarding proposals for new work, research materials for books to be illustrated, typescripts of material from books to be illustrated, some with Moser's sketches or author's notes about ideas for the illustrations, and woodblocks for the prints, including those for Alice's adventures in Wonderland. Also includes notes, letters, research materials, preliminary sketches, and page proofs for many of the books Moser illustrated, including John Brown's body (published as: John Brown's body [by] Stephen Vincent Benét. -- New York : Book-of-the-Month Club, c1956), Timing devices (published as: Timing devices : poems [by] Paul Mariani. -- Easthampton, Mass. : Pennyroyal Press, c1977), Moby Dick (published as: Moby Dick, or, the whale [by] Herman Melville. -- San Francisco : Arion Press, c1979), The odyssey (published as: The oddyssey of Homer. -- New York : The Limited Edition Club, c1981), and Alice's adventures in Wonderland (published as: Lewis Carroll's Alice's adventures in Wonderland. -- West Hatfield, Mass. : printed by Harold McGrath at Pennyroyal Press, c1982).

Title:
Charles Roberts Anderson papers, 1806-1993 and undated.
The Charles Roberts Anderson Papers span the dates 1806-1993 and document his active career as professor of American literature at Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Included are research materials on the intellectual life of Charleston, S.C., and on American literary figures such as Paul Hamilton Hayne, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Sidney Lanier (to whom Anderson was related), Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others. Additional material includes correspondence and files on Anderson's publications; lectures and files related to teaching; travel diaries and keepsakes; and other papers related to his family history and academic career. Copies of correspondence and other documents by Anderson's research subjects, particularly Hayne, detail elements of life in the South in the nineteenth century. In addition, material in this collection chronicles the academic life of Anderson and provides insight into the state of literary scholarship and publishing in the mid-twentieth century. Early dates usually reflect the dates of the content of original material photocopied by Anderson in the course of his research. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

Papers, 1812-1865.
The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

History of American literature : notes for lectures and a possible book, ca. 1950-1968.
470 5 x 8-inch cards, 169 written on both sides. Winters had said that he prepared for his essays by lecturing on a writer until he had the subject down and then wrote the essay in a draft or two. There are cards included that deal with writers whom he taught but about whom he never wrote an essay. Dates cover roughly from the beginning to about T.S. Eliot. An example of two major writers covered, one of whom Winters despised and one admired: there are 42 cards (51 sides) devoted to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and 42 cards (69 sides) devoted to Henry James. There are also some 14 sides devoted to Mexican literature.

Mary Sargeant Gove Nichols letters to Alonzo Lewis [manuscript], 1848-1859, undated.
Over the course of 11 years, Nichols writes to her dear friend Alonzo Lewis about poetry, her life, and career as an author. The letters are typically very stream-of-consciousness, and Nichols often delves into issues of religion, including her conversion to Roman Catholicism, family, and the ways in which Lewis is "truly a poet." Briefly mentions Anna Bishop, Sarah Jane Lipppincott Clarke (Grace Greenwood), Rufus Wilmot Griswold, Jenny Lind, Herman Melville, John Godfrey Saxe, [Richard Henry?] Stoddard, and Nathaniel Willis. Includes a poem, written as a valentine, entitled "The rose and the ray." Collection also contains a letter from J. E. Worcester sending a dictionary.
