Merchant & grandfather of Herman Melville. Came from a Scottish background, participated in the Boston Tea Party, was a Major in the Crafts Artillery Regiment in the Revolutionary War, and was appointed Surveyor of the Port of Boston and Charleston (i.e. Collector).
