American author and humorist Gelett Burgess (1866-1951) was educated as an engineer and worked briefly for a railroad. He taught topographical drawing between 1891 and 1894 at the University of California, Berkeley until he lost his position after deliberately toppling a campus statue he found to be an eyesore. Burgess founded the Lark, a humour magazine based in San Francisco, published from 1895 to 1897. Burgess created nonsense rhymes and cartoons such as "The Purple Cow: Reflections on a Mythic Beast Who's Quite Remarkable, at Least" (1895) and "Goops" books, humorous instructional books featuring misbehaving creatures with poor manners, whose antics were published in book form between 1900 and 1950 and syndicated in cartoon form in 1925.
American author and illustrator.
Writer, journalist, illustrator, humorist.
Burgess's addressee probably is Benjamin Batchelder Valentine (1843-1926), author and dramatist, and editorial writer and drama critic for the New York Herald (1891-98). The reference to "Miss Jordan" is to Elizabeth Garver Jordan, editor of Harper's Bazaar, 1900-13. Mrs. Lloyd Osbourne appears to be Katherine Osbourne, né Durham, wife of the American author.
Burgess was an American author and editor.

Biography
Gelett Burgess was born on Jan. 30, 1866, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1887 as a civil engineer. After serving a number of years as a draughtsman on survey work for the Southern Pacific Railway and as an instructor of topographical engineering at the University of California, he turned to writing.
His literary career began in 1894 in San Francisco as associate editor of The Wave. During the period 1895-97 he not only served as editor of The Lark but, with Porter Garnett, published Le Petit Journal des Refusées and Phyllida. All three were radical departures from conventional magazines and The Lark, with its originality and the famous Purple Cow verse which appeared in its first issue, gained him considerable fame.
With the demise of The Lark in 1897, Burgess left California for New York to pursue a literary career. By the time of his death in 1951, he had written some 30 books, illustrating many of them also, and had been a frequent contributor to magazines with his short stories, poems and essays. Despite the variety and quantity of his literary output, his name was generally associated with humorous, satirical writing. Included among his most famous works are the Burgess Nonsense Book (1901), Are You A Bromide? (1907), The Heart Line (1907), the satirical Maxims of Methuselah (1907), and Maxims of Noah (1913), Two O' Clock Courage (1934), and Look Eleven Years Younger (1937). His manuals of manners in rhyme for children, the Goop books, have become nursery classics.
Although Burgess traveled widely and lived in New York, Boston, San Francisco, London and Paris, in the public mind he has been identified with San Francisco. In 1950 he returned to California and settled in Carmel, and it was there he died in 1951.

Title:
Correspondence, 1872-1964.
The collection consists primarily of incoming correspondence, including typed and holograph manuscripts, postcards, Christmas cards, photographs, newspaper clippings, autographs, and a calendar that span Schauffler's lifetime. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including poetry, music composition, public taste in music and literature, and publishing. Among the more significant pieces of correspondence are a series of letters from Grace Hazard Conkling, in which she discusses the character and literary theories of Amy Lowell, Germany and German music, the image of porpoises in her own verse, George Saintsbury's A History of English Prose Rhythm, and Beethoven; letters written by the poet Louise Imogen Guiney to Edward A. Church; German translations of Schauffler's poetry done by Heinrich Barban; a lively discussion of music in the letters of Elizabeth C. Moore; letters from James Oppenheim, comparing poetry to music, questioning proper contemporary poetic subjects, and examining the differences between poetry of the nineteenth century and the twentieth; and, finally, correspondence from George Sterling, in which he touches upon the death of Jack London, his own impending divorce, sobriety, and the beauty of Carmel, California. In addition there are a number of typed and holograph manuscripts of poems, including Katherine Lee Bates's "The Debt," Robert Graves's "Burrs & Brambles," Clement Allison's "The Matter with the Poets" and others, poems by Clark Ashton Smith and George Sterling, Louis Untermeyer's "Spratt vs. Spratt" with corrections in his own hand, Edmund Gosse's "The Fear of Death," poems by Jessie Kemp Hawkins, Richard Hovey's "Matthew Arnold," Robert Underwood Johnson's "October" and "Portae Musarum," poems by Theda Kenyon, George Cabot Lodge's "Life and Death," poems by Charles F. Autograph letter signed from Tyrone Power, Baltimore, to William Jefferson Winter, New Brighton [manuscript], 1910 January 30.

Power also questions the casting in the New Theatre's production of Twelfth night: "A.R. [i.e. Annie Russell] as Viola & the husband [i.e. Oswald Yorke] as Malvolio - tut! tut!" and adds "I saw Irving many times as Malvolio and E.T. [i.e. Ellen Terry] as Viola." Letter begins "Dear Willyum" and is signed "Fred" (correspondent identified as Tyrone Power in annotation in Winter's hand). On letterhead of the Hotel Belvedere. Nash, Ogden, 1902-1971. Ogden Nash Collection, 1882-1969 (bulk 1928-1969).
Title:
Ogden Nash Collection, 1882-1969 (bulk 1928-1969).
Manuscripts of poems, short stories, collections of verse, and other writings, correspondence, and miscellany trace the writing career and personal life of Ogden Nash, 1882-1969 (bulk 1928-1969). The collection is organized into four series which are generally arranged alphabetically by author or title. The Works series contains drafts of over 350 of Nash's poems and published collections, many of them holographs, as well as typed and copied versions with edits, printer's marks and notes. In addition, an untitled and unpublished novel, lyrics, scripts, and a few essays and speeches are scattered through the series, which is arranged alphabetically. The Letters series consists almost entirely of 577 letters from Nash to his wife, Frances Leonard Nash. Additionally, there are letters to publishers, friends, and in-laws. The Recipient series is composed of letters and telegrams from friends, fans, editors, and publishers to Nash. These include Larry Adler, Spiro Agnew, Nicolas Bentley, Gelett Burgess, Curtis Brown, Ltd., Walt Disney, Corey Ford, Eugene McCarthy, Groucho Marx, Marianne Moore, Christopher Morley, the New Yorker, Charles G. Norris, S.J. Perelman, J.B. Priestley, John Pudney, John Updike, E.B. White, and P.G. Wodehouse. The Miscellaneous series contans a wide variety of material ranging from honorary degrees awarded to Nash, a journal of publishing informationfor all of Nash's published poems, certificates of membership in various societies, wedding license and program, and biographical information and obituary notices for family members. A series of letters from Edmund Strudwick, Nash's father, spans 1882-1924. Also included in this series are galley proofs for E.B. White's collection of verses, "The Fox of Peapack and Other Poems," letters from Frances L. Nash to her mother, and minutes from the Nassau and Suffolk County Deviled Ham and Lake Ronkonkoma Club meetings.
