The peculiar history of the chewin'-gum man [manuscript], 1895?

A fair copy of Burgess's poem typed in a composition book with minor variations from the published text. Illustrated with four pen and ink and watercolor drawings, all different from the illustrations in the published text. Front cover contains signature "C. B. Burgess," probably his older brother Clinton Brooks Burgess. The printed version, as it appeared in "The purple cow," 1898, is included.

American author and humorist Gelett Burgess (1866-1951) was educated as an engineer and worked briefly for a railroad. He taught topographical drawing between 1891 and 1894 at the University of California, Berkeley until he lost his position after deliberately toppling a campus statue he found to be an eyesore.
