Thomas Nelson Jr. (December 26, 1738 – January 4, 1789) was an American soldier and statesman from Yorktown, Virginia, and is considered one of the U.S. Founding Fathers. In addition to serving in the Virginia General Assembly for many terms, he twice represented Virginia in the Continental Congress. Fellow Virginia legislators elected him to serve as the commonwealth's governor in 1781. He signed the Declaration of Independence as a member of the Virginia delegation and fought in the militia during the siege of Yorktown.
Born in Yorktown, he was sent to England for his education. He attended Newcome's School before entering Christ's College at Cambridge University in 1758. He graduated in 1760 and returned to Virginia the following year. Upon returning to Virginia, Nelson assisted his father in the operation of his several plantations, which depended on the labor of enslaved African Americans. York County voters elected Nelson to the Virginia House of Burgesses as a young man in 1761; he succeeded Robert Carter Nicholas in this part-time position. He was a member of the Virginia provincial convention in 1775, and there he undertook the creation of the Virginia Militia. He then assumed duty as its first Commander. Shortly thereafter he was elected to the Continental Congress, signing the Declaration of Independence. Nelson began suffering health problems in 1777 and thought best to retire to his native state. He resumed his military service, much to the benefit of both Virginia and his health. He was reelected to Congress in 1779 but his health again declined and he returned to Virginia several months later.
Nelson represented York County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1777 to 1781, relinquishing his legislative seat upon being elected governor of Virginia in June 1781. Nelson was engaged in the final Siege of Yorktown between September and October 1781. He was again elected to the House of Delegates from York County, servoing from 1782 to 1784 and from 1786 to 1788. Nelson died at his son's home in Hanover County, Virginia, and is buried in the Grace Churchyard at Yorktown.

USHistory.org biography, Thomas Nelson Jr., accessed January 5, 2021.

Thomas Nelson Jr. was born into the aristocratic society of Virginia in December of 1738. Like most of the southern Gentleman of his day, he gained a private education in England, culminating in a degree from Cambridge. He returned in 1761 and soon became involved in service to his colony and his country. Elected to the House of Burgesses in 1774, he was one of eighty nine who convened at the Raleigh tavern when that house was dissolved by the royal Governor. He was a member of the Virginia provincial convention in 1775, and there he undertook the creation of the Virginia Militia. He then assumed duty as its first Commander. Shortly thereafter he was elected to the Continental Congress. Nelson began suffering health problems in 1777 and thought best to retire to his native state. He resumed his military service, much to the benefit of both Virginia and his health. He was reelected to Congress in 1779 but his health again declined and he returned to Virginia several months later.

Once again he resumed service, as commanding General of the Lower Virginia Militia, at a time when British forces began aggressive campaigns against the southern colonies. In 1781, Thomas Jefferson declined reelection as Governor due to his inability to serve the needs of a state under siege. General Nelson succeeded Jefferson and served as both Civil Governor and Commander in chief of the Virginia Militia. Under his command Virginia, both civil and Military, became a force to contend with. Both the Continental Army and French forces utilized the skills of the Virginia units in the Siege of Yorktown in the autumn of 1781.

Finally overcome by illness in October of that year, General Nelson retired from public service. He died at one of his estates, in Hanover County, in 1789 at the age of 50.

Brockenbrough, William, fl. 1763,. Papers of the Carter and Wellford family of Sabine Hall, 1650 (1736-1874) 1936.
Title:
Papers of the Carter and Wellford family of Sabine Hall, 1650 (1736-1874) 1936.
The papers of the Carter and Wellford families contain deeds, patents, stocks and bonds, wills maps, surveys, and indentures as well as correspondence. The early correspondence of Landon Carter (1710-1778) deals with tobacco production and sale, land purchases, and management of his plantation. Family and neighborhood news is frequently conveyed. Later correspondence contains many references to political troubles with England, action taken in Virginia, and events in the first years of the Revolution such as the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Virginia Convention, and includes several letters to the editor of the Virginia Gazette on the political situation. The diary of Landon Carter, 1763-1778, records daily farming activities, with many comments on his slaves, remarks on the Revolution and its ultimate effect, and reflections on his estrangement from his son Robert Wormeley Carter, the second (1792-1861). The correspondence of Robert Wormeley Carter the second contains more local and agricultural news with a few letters generated by the latter's political career touching on national politics. Of interest are mentions of the War of 1812 and the evacuation of slaves at the approach of British warships, a letter from John Tyler on Andrew Jackson's fiscal policies, and comments on the Whig Party and the Virginia Reform Convention of 1851. One Civil War letter mentions the death of an acquaintance and two affadavits, 1863, concern slaves who fled to Union forces. Interspersed in the large segment of R.W. Carter II's estate settlement papers are several comments on reconstruction in Virginia. Correspondence of Dr. Armistead Nelson Wellford, is chiefly business in nature but also includes his official Civil War pardon signed by President Andrew Johnson. Papers of his son Robert Carter Wellford and grandson Armistead Nelso Wellford include University of Virginia report cards and correspondence with Cassius Francis Lee, Jr., and Earl G. Swem discussing the respective sale and preservation of the Sabine Hall Papers. Correspondence of women in the family includes discussions of schooling, social events, and sickness and deaths. Of interest are a comment on Charlotte Brontë's "Vilette" and a commonplace book of Elizabeth Merry Tayloe's poems. Other items of interest include the agricultural journals, 1813-1860, and mill book containing a slave register, 1831-1845, of the second R.W. Carter; a list of "Negroes Baptized in Richmond County 1723-1724"; election returns for Lancaster and Richmond Counties, 1836; an 1872 brochure urging immigration to the Northern Neck; agricultural essays and medical observations of the 1st Landon Carter and an inventory of his estate; and physician's account ledgers of Beverley R. Wellford. Seventeenth century items include land patents, from William Berkeley, 1650-1665; a surveys, 1650-1684; deeds of sale and indentures; and the will of John Rice. Correspondents include Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, William Brockenbrough, Charles Carter, Samuel Chase, Raleigh Colston, Richard Corbin, Francis Fauquier, the Rev. Isaac W. Giberne, Arthur Lee, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Henry Lee, Richard Lee, Richard Henry Lee, Robert E. Lee (a receipt), George Mason, William Meade, Thomas Nelson, Robert Carter Nicholas, John Page, vice chairman of the Committee of Safety, Peter Pelham, Alexander Purdie, Peyton Randolph, William Rind, Joseph Royle, Earl G. Describes events following the passage of the resolves including the striking of the British flag and a militia muster on the green. [George] Mason and Thomas Ludwell Lee feel Lee's presence in Williamsburg is essential. Lafayette writes of military operations taking place in Virginia: "Major MacPherson having taken up fifty light infantry, behind fifty dragoons overtook Simcoe and regardless of numbers, made an immediate charge. He was supported by the rifle-men who behaved most gallantly and did great execution. The alarm guns were fired at Williamsburg (only six miles distant from the field)." After giving report of the casualties on both sides, he continues. "They (the enemy) acknowledge the action was smart, and Lord Cornwallis was heard to express himself vehemently upon the disproportion between his and our killed, which must be attributed to the greater skill of our rifle-men."

Title:
Papers of the Nelson family [manuscript], 1743-1789.
The papers in this collection are largely those of Thomas Nelson (1738-1789), son of William Nelson (1711-1772). In addition to his duties running a large plantation, Thomas served the state of Virginia in many capacities including delegate to the Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence, commander of troops during the Revolutionary War, and governor. The papers, primarily legal documents and letters concerning business or political affairs, reflect all phases of his life. Included are a legal document (1743) appointing a county clerk, two letters (1774) concerning payment for use of a lighthouse, a bill of exchange (1771) a letter (1780) to him reporting on the movement of British ships off the coast of Virginia, and two letters (1781) to the Virginia House of Delegates, regarding the "defense of his activities as governor." Also included are bills of exchange and other monetary agreements (1783-1787) made by Thomas's brothers Hugh and Robert Nelson.

Title:
Letter book of William and Thomas Nelson [manuscript], 1766-1775.
Letters in the first part of the book were all written by William Nelson between 1766-1772 and deal primarily with his business affairs. Included are letters to merchants giving account balances and receipts and invoices for goods sent and received. Also included are letters to ship captains concerning bills of lading for the Nelson's tobacco. Thomas Nelson begins writing these business letters in 1772 with William's illness and continues them after his father's death. Some of the 1772 letters deal with settling the estate and are signed by Thomas's brother Hugh Nelson. By 1774, Thomas writes to one merchant "poor America is greatly disrupted at this time" and subsequent letters occasionally refer to the turbulent political climate and its impact on trade.

Nelson family. Papers of the Nelson family [manuscript], 1739-1837.
Title:
Papers of the Nelson family [manuscript], 1739-1837.
This microfilm collection contributed by various libraries and historical societies contains papers of the descendents of Thomas (Scotch Tom) Nelson who emigrated from Penrith, England, to Yorktown, Va., in the 1700s. The papers are mainly those by Thomas's son William (1711-1772) and William's son Thomas (1738-1789), though papers by other Nelson family members are also included. In addition to their duties of running a plantation, both Nelsons served the state of Virginia in many ways, William as president of the council and governor (1770-71) and Thomas as delegate to the Continental Congress (1775) where he signed the Declaration of Independence, commander of troops in the American Revolution, and governor (June-Nov. 1781). The collection reflects these roles, consisting primarily of legal documents (wills, deeds, etc.) and letters concerning business or political affairs. Papers from the Duke University Library include the indenture (1739) of a Thomas Nelson, a deed (1771) and will (1772) of William Nelson, a handwritten biographical sketch (11 p.) about Thomas Nelson (1738-1789) written by his grandson Thomas Jefferson Page, and a revolutionary war letter (1781) of Thomas's. Papers from the New York Public Library include a letter (1752) of William's concerning a financial agreement and a petition (1772) to Virginia Governor Dunmore written by Patrick Henry and co-signed by William and Thomas Nelson. Also included are ten letters (1776-1786) of Thomas's which recount proceedings of the Continental Congress, itemize for the state his travel expenses 1775-1777, ask for a full account of the counties' arms and military stores, and inform various generals about the movement of British troops and the availability of men and supplies. Papers from the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, include Thomas's American Revolution letters (1777-1781) to and from General George Weedon. Papers from the Harvard College Library cover a wide range of topics and include a letter (1791) from Thomas Jefferson which mentions a box of books contributed by William Nelson for "public use," a list (1774) of donations from Virginia for relief of the city of Boston, letters to and from Thomas Nelson (1781, 1788), and correspondence (1837) between the Page family and Samuel Smith regarding payment to Thomas's ancestors for money he loaned the state during the revolution. Papers from the University of Michigan include letters (1771) from William Nelson to an unnamed British army officer in New York concerning Virginia recruitment efforts. Also included are Thomas Nelson's letters (1781) to and from General Nathanael Greene and a letter (1781) congratulating him on his appointment as governor signed by prominent Virginians, including Edmund Randolph. Thomas Nelson's papers from the New York Historical Society include a letter (1776) concerning his appointment to a Board of War and a frantic group of twenty letters (Jan.-Feb. 1781) written to various generals in the midst of a British invasion of Virginia. Also included are letter (June- Aug. 1781) addressed to him as governor from the Marquis de Lafayette concerning provisions for Virginia's troops. Papers from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania include William Nelson's letter (1748) concerning the ethics of a particular financial arrangement and a letter (1771) written while governor concerning a liquor trade agreement with the Indians. Also included are two letters (1777, 1779) of Lt. Col. William Nelson.
