Letters in the first part of the book were all written by William Nelson between 1766-1772 and deal primarily with his business affairs. Included are letters to merchants giving account balances and receipts and invoices for goods sent and received. Also included are letters to ship captains concerning bills of lading for the Nelson's tobacco. Thomas Nelson begins writing these business letters in 1772 with William's illness and continues them after his father's death. Some of the 1772 letters deal with settling the estate and are signed by Thomas's brother Hugh Nelson. By 1774, Thomas writes to one merchant "poor America is greatly disrupted at this time" and subsequent letters occasionally refer to the turbulent political climate and its impact on trade.

Merchants and landholders in Yorktown, the Nelsons were active in the politics of Colonial Virginia. William (1711-1772) held a variety of offices, among them president of the Virginia council and governor 1770-1771). William Nelson was the son of Thomas Nelson who arrived in Yorktown, Va., from England in 1705. Thomas was a successful merchant whose business concerns passed to his son William upon his death.
