This small collection contains letters, 1780-1781, written to Josiah Parker (1751-1810) concerning his command of Virginia militia south of the James River. Also, includes an order book, 1781, of Parker's Brigade. Correspondents include George Rogers Clark (1752-1818), Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), Robert Lawson (1748-1805), John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746-1807), Thomas Nelson (1738-1789), and Baron von Steuben (1730-1794). Topics include Parker's acceptance of a command of militia drawn from Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Norfolk, and Princess Anne counties, Va.; British troop movements in Virginia in 1781, chiefly in the areas around Petersburg, on the James River Peninsula, and in Hampton Roads; desertion; and the imposition of martial law.

Josiah Parker (1751-1810), born at "Macclesfield," Isle of Wight County, Va., 11 May 1751, served on the local Committee of Safety in 1775 before enlisting in the Continental Army.
