Thirty-four lettters from Thackeray to his friends the Perry sisters. Many of the letters concern Thackeray's relationship with their mutual friends, Rev. William Henry Brookfield and Brookfield's wife Jane. Other principal topics are Thackeray's lecture tours and other travels, his writings, and other mutual friends. Also present are six small drawings by Thackeray; a photographic copy of a letter from him to the Perrys, not present in the original; a manuscript in an unidentified hand of a Christmas poem attributed to Thackeray, 1848; a letter from his daughter Anne Thackeray Ritchie to a bookdealer, probably J. Pearson, 1902, enclosed in a letter from Pearson's to William H. Lambert; a catalog from the sale of Kate Perry's collection at Sotheby's; and a newspaper clipping about the sale.

ALS : La Grange, Tenn., to Jesse Root Grant, 186[2] Nov. 23.
Most of the first page is scribbled over, apparently to discourage casual readers, since it deals with sensitive family matters. Grant takes his father to task for his condescending attitude toward his wife, Julia, and reminds him that his son Frederick is sensitive and unhealthy and needs cod liver oil and less scolding. In the rest of the letter he says that reports of his recent battles will be published and he is about to move again.

Elaborating on a statement made in a speech on October 7, Gladstone states his belief (shared by most of the British upper and middle classes and many others in Europe) that the Union cannot be preserved by war. He argues that by continuing with no possibility of success the U.S. is responsible for all the damage and suffering caused by the war in Europe as well as at home. If the U.S. lets the South go it will improve its character by ridding itself of slavery, and will soon recover from its material losses as well.

Collection , 1813-1878.
Collection of letters relating to the life and work of Charles Lamb, by some of his close friends and literary associates. [1] George Dawe to Robert Southey, London, 1813 Jan. 25 [2 p.]--Offers praise for Coleridge's new play and mentions Lamb's attendance at the production. [2] Charles W. Reynell to William [?], London, 1861 Apr. 4 [3 p.]--Corrects some facts regarding Lamb's connection with a compilation called Classic tales and offers some editorial advice. [3] Charles Ryle to J.B. Payne, London, 1866 Sept. 28 [2 p.]--Acknowledges receipt of three inquiries, but regrets that he has little to offer beyond personal recollections of Lamb. [4] Theodore Martin to W.C. Hazlitt, London, 1866 Nov. 20 [2 p.]--Informs Hazlitt, who is compiling a complete edition of Charles Lamb's works, of the Lamb material in his possession. He also transcribes a "Dramatic Fragment" of Lamb's. [5] F.S. Cary to Bateman, Dorking, 1878 Dec. 7 [2 p.]--Discusses portraits of Charles and Mary Lamb painted by Cary in the 1830's. [6] Engraving of Mary Shelley. [7] Mary Shelley to John Howard Payne, Sussex, 1827 Aug. 22 [3 p.]--A despondent letter in which she broods over evils past and future, and mentions Lamb's difficulties with the farce he is writing. [8] Mary Shelley to Mary Lamb, Kentish Town, 1827 July 22 [3 p.]--Regrets that she will not be able to call on the Lambs and mentions that her"pecuniary problems are over--as I am promised a regular tho' small income from my father-in-law." [9] Robert Southey, AMs poem, "To Charles Lamb", [1831 Mar. 1] [2 p.]. [10] William Hone to John Scott, Peckham Rye Common, 1834 Feb. 6 [4 p.]--Relating largely to his financial difficulties and his application to the Literary Fund Society for a pension. He writes that "Lamb is the only man who knows me intimately--all my other intimacies have been with books--but I fear from Miss Lamb's illness, which is of a very peculiar nature, he may be ill himself, and though I have written to him at Enfield it is just possible that I may not hear back from him in answer." [11] William Hone to Dr. West, Tottenham, 1840 Nov. 28 [2 p.]--Relating to his financial difficulties and referring at length to Charles Lamb. [12] Bernard Barton to Charles Lamb, Woodbridge, 1827 Sept. 19 [4 p.]--Inquires into the possibility that Lamb's drama, "This wife's trials", will be printed. [13] Engraving of Robert Southey. [14] Bernard Barton to Charles Lamb, Woodbridge, 1845 Oct. 30 [2 p. + printed sonnet]--Barton has written A sonnet, in memorial of Elizabeth Fry, which he is enclosing to Lamb. [15] Leigh Hunt to Charles Ollier, [no year] Dec. 12 [2 p.]--Demands insertion of an article which he refers to as "the Pig" in Ollier's publication.

American Ballet Theatre records 1936-ca. 1967
American Ballet Theatre was founded in 1939 with the intention of creating an American company of international stature, a museum of the dance, “which would preserve the best of the classic tradition of Europe and at the same time lay the foundation for a new tradition, American in concept and spirit.” Its guiding principle was to encourage collaboration between artists with no single choreographer taking precedence. The records of the company attest to the pursuit of these goals.

Correspondence : with William and Jane Brookfield, [1834?]-1896 (bulk 1847-1854).
Thirty-one letters from Thackeray to Jane Brookfield, five to William Brookfield, and one to a Mr. Cazati; one from Jane Brookfield to Thackeray and five to a bookdealer (probably J. Pearson). Thackeray's letters to Jane cover a variety of topics in addition to their relationship, especially their families and mutual friends, his writings, his lecture tours and other travels, and his health. The letters to William are mostly apologies written after one of his periodic protests. Also present are eight envelopes addressed to Jane by Thackeray; two small sketches by him, one cut from a letter; and a newspaper obituary for Jane.
