Most of the first page is scribbled over, apparently to discourage casual readers, since it deals with sensitive family matters. Grant takes his father to task for his condescending attitude toward his wife, Julia, and reminds him that his son Frederick is sensitive and unhealthy and needs cod liver oil and less scolding. In the rest of the letter he says that reports of his recent battles will be published and he is about to move again.
