Grant tells his father that he refuses to engage in the political wire-pulling necessary to obtain a commission, but is willing to serve when requested. In the meantime, he is in command of the camp and busy drilling recruits. He expects that the war will be brief, but Northern troops may be called upon to suppress a slave insurrection.
