Title:
City Council committees on the Army and Navy Monument records, 1866, 1870-1871, 1877.
Collection includes the records of the various city council committees on the Army and Navy Monument. The committee records of 1866 include designs proposed for the monument and correspondence relating to the designs and selection of a site for the monument. Several of the proposed designs are missing. Most of the proposals are written descriptions. Some sketches are included. One item of interest is the notes recording the opinions on the submitted designs of several prominent citizens of Boston including Samuel Eliot, Francis Parkman, Theodore Lyman, and Charles Sumner. The records of the committee of 1870 include designs submitted for the monument and a list of persons submitting designs. The designs are written descriptions of what the proposed monument will look like. One submission includes drawings. Several of the proposed designs are missing including those of Martin Milmore, the eventual winner of the competition. The records of the committee on the laying of the cornerstone of monument of 1871 include orders, correspondence, news clippings, miscellaneous records, and lists of invited guests. The records of the committee on the dedication of monument of 1877 include orders, correspondence, miscellaneous records, requests for payments, invoices, plans, invitations, tickets, list of invited guests, and programs. The oversized material includes plans of formation and procession, platforms, and seats. The artifacts include two badges worn by City Council members and members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) at the dedication ceremony.

Eliot, Samuel, 1821-1898. Personal and family papers, 1810-1910
Title:
Personal and family papers, 1810-1910.
The papers of Samuel Eliot (1821-1898) comprise an unique, multi-faceted family archive spanning the years 1810-1910. Accumulated by various members of the Otis and Eliot families of Boston, the collection consists of diaries, scrapbooks, letters, miscellaneous documents and associated printed matter. The collection clearly illustrates the background, education and activities of Samuel Eliot, Harvard class of 1839, historian and social reformer, who served as president of Trinity College, Hartford, and superintendent of Boston Public Schools. The Eliot papers are anchored by his lucid and fascinating 12 v. diary, 1839-1898, in which he records daily activities (with excursions to the South, Cuba and Europe) as well as religious and philosophical reflections. Of note are Eliot's perceptions of the slavery issue, Whig politics and the reform of education. Covered in greatest detail are the years prior to 1870. Allied to the diary are letters received, 1829-1898, which demonstrate the full range of his familial and professional ties. Many of the correspondents, including Phillips Brooks, Charles W. Eliot, Julia Ward Howe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Jared Sparks and George Ticknor were important figures of the day. The sum of the papers paints a vivid portrait of an enlightened and articulate civil servant of the Gilded Age.

Richard Price Papers, 1767-1790
Title:
Richard Price Papers 1767-1790
The Welsh non-conformist minister Richard Price (1723-1791) was a moral philosopher and political and economic theorist whose ideas leant support to the American cause during the Revolution. Of broad and liberal mind, he was an integral member of the intellectual coterie surrounding William Petty, the Earl of Shelburne, and was a founding member of the Unitarian Church. Befitting a latitudinarian thinker, the range of Richard Price's correspondence is extremely broad, touching upon his rationalistic philosophy and dissenting theology, his political views on British politics, America and the American Revolution, the Constitutional settlement, the future of the United States, social reform, demography, prisons, and slavery. The ninety letters in the collection are arranged chronologically, with correspondents including Charles Chauncy (8 letters, 1772-1779), Benjamin Franklin (7 letters, 1775-1789), John Howard (11 letters and a biographical manuscript, 1770-1789), Thomas Jefferson (3 letters, 1785-1789), Benjamin Rush (8 letters, 1786-1790), and Edward Wigglesworth (3 letters, 1775-1786), as well as lesser known figures such as the reformer John Howard.

Denham, Edward, 1849-1925. Papers, 1876-1888.
Title:
Papers, 1876-1888.
Collection consists of drafts of letters, 1876-1877, and letters received, 1876-1888. Drafts of letters are to Denham's friends Henry G. Menage, of Calumet, Michigan, some concerning the extensive collection of historical autographs collected by Mrs. Thomas A. Greene of New Bedford. Letters from Charles William Eliot, Samuel Eliot, William J. Potter, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and others, consist of responses to Denham's Why is history read so little? (New Bedford, 1876). Denham's principal correspondents are Henry G. Menage and Joseph Henry Dubbs, professor at Franklin & Marshall College. Dubbs reports on his acquisition of Thomas Godfrey's Poems (1756), laments railroad strikes, regrets that he does not own any editions of Phillis Wheatley's poems, praises Viollet-le-Duc's Lectures on architecture and compares New Englanders' and Pennsylvanians' appetites for food and learning. Other writers, antiquarians, genealogists, publishers, historians and authors include Zachariah Allen, John Ward Dean, Samuel A. Green, Joel Munsell, Frederic B. Perkins, Henry B. Dawson, Edmund F. Slafter, Linus P. Brockett, Powhatan Bouldin, Theodore F. Dwight, John Austin Stevens, Townsend Ward, William Henry Egle, Charles Rogers, R.A. Brock, P. Hately Waddell, Charles Hawley, Frederick W. Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
