Irish novelist.
English novelist and children's writer.
Maria Edgeworth was a novelist and children's writer from Oxfordshire, England. Edgeworthstown was her father's estate in Ireland.
Edgeworth, novelist, was born in England, the daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth and his first wife, Anna Maria Elers. After attending several English boarding schools, she settled in Edgeworthstown, Ireland, with her father and his family. She was the first of the "local Irish" novelists; her first book was published in 1800. Besides novels, Edgeworth wrote children's stories. She died in Edgeworthstown on May 21, 1849.
British novelist and writer of children's books.
Maria Edgeworth was an Irish writer of regional novels and books on social conditions and children's education.
Maria Edgeworth, 1767-1849, novelist, was the third daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817), inventor, educator and writer. The family lived in Edgeworthstown in County Longford, Ireland where Richard Edgeworth owned an extensive estate and Maria, who was one of 22 children by her father's four wives, was heavily involved in the education of her brothers and sisters. She is an important figure in the history of women's writing and also in the history of education, particularly in the promotion of education of women. Her first works were Letters for Literary Ladies (1795) in which she defended female education and two volumes on Practical Education (1798), written in conjunction with her father. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent, appeared in 1800 and she continued to produce works of fiction, including children's stories, up to 1834 when her last novel, Helen, was published. She is considered to have been a literary influence on a number of other writers including Sir Walter Scott, and Thackeray and Jane Austen is known to have been an admirer of her works.

Archive of Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), and the Edgeworth family, 17th-19th century
Title:
Archive of Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849), and the Edgeworth family, 17th-19th century
The collection comprises correspondence and literary papers of Maria Edgeworth, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Michael Pakenham Edgeworth and other members of the Edgeworth family. The literary manuscripts are holograph unless otherwise indicated. However, since much of the Edgeworths' literary and educational work was collaborative, where possible both the author and the amanuensis have been identified. For a bibliography of the works of Maria Edgeworth, see Bertha Coolidge Slade, Maria Edgeworth, 1767-1849, a bibliographical tribute(London, 1937), referred to throughout as Slade. For a biography of Maria Edgeworth, see Marilyn Butler, Maria Edgeworth - a literary biography (Oxford, 1972), referred to below as Butler; there is a family tree on p. 489. Selections from Maria Edgeworth's correspondence have been published as Maria Edgeworth, letters from England 1813-1844, ed. Christina Colvin (Oxford, 1971), and Maria Edgeworth in France and Switzerland, ed. Christina Colvin (Oxford, 1979). A detailed calendar of Maria's letters and of selections from the family correspondence, arranged chronologically, was compiled by Mrs. Colvin and is in MS. Facs. c. 99. It has been annotated with the Bodleian shelfmarks of the individual letters. An embroidered evening bag of Maria Edgeworth, early 19th cent., given by Lady Colvin [1998?], is Janitor's List of Library Portraits and Objects 743.

Title:
Damer family papers, 1800-1850.
A collection of 16 autograph letters and 3 letter fragments, chiefly written to George Lionel Dawson-Damer or his wife. Some undated; dated or dateable letters range from 1800-1850. Some letters accompanied by original envelope and/or with original seal. Includes one letter from George Lionel Dawson-Damer to his father's cousin, Lady Caroline Damer, thanking her for her contribution of 5000 pounds towards his expenses in the Irish election, and 2 letters to Lady Caroline from her brother, the Earl of Dorchester. Correspondents include the future 5th Duke of Newcastle (then Earl of Lincoln) and such Regency figures as Lord Alvanley, Abraham Hayward and the Duchess of Cannizzaro. Content consists chiefly of society gossip and political speculation. One of the letters from the Earl of Dorchester, dated 1800, mentions the death of Lord Waterford, and a discussion of Maria Edgeworth's "Castle Rackrent," which is described as "the delight of everybody." Another letter from an unidentified ABD of February 1850 praises Victor Hugo's "eloquent denunciation of priestcraft". The undated letter from Hayward describes Disraeli's book as having "fallen stillborn." A letter from E. de Castija appears to have been written from Paris at the time of the Fieschi trial.

The collection consists of primarily personal letters (bulk 1810-1850) containing detailed information about family, social, and local events in Richmond and Petersburg, Va.; Raleigh, Warrenton, and Wilmington, N.C.; and Mobile, Ala. Subjects include the Mordecai Female Academy at Warrenton, N.C., 1809-1818; the Richmond Theater fire of 1811; correspondence between Rachel Mordecai Lazarus and novelist Maria Edgeworth; activities in Virginia, North Carolina, and New Orleans during the War of 1812; travels of family members; Judaism; Ellen Mordecai's writing and publishing; and births, deaths, and domestic activities. Emma Mordecai's journal, 1864-1865, chronicles the fall of Richmond, Va. The Addition of January 2007 includes personal letters between family members; 1816 letters by Maria Edgeworth and Richard Lovell Edgeworth responding to Rachel Mordecai Lazarus's letter concerning Edgeworth's literary treatment of Jews; and reminiscences, song lyrics, and fragments. Addition of September 2007 includes letters written to and by Mordecai family members, 1865 and 1916-1917, and a poem dated 1945. The Addition of December 2007 contains the three-volume "A Memoir of Maria Edgeworth with a Selection from Her Letters by the late Mrs. Edgeworth" (unpublished) with accompanying notes tipped in. The Addition of April 2011 includes a volume of typewritten copies of correspondence between Rachel Mordecai Lazarus and Maria Edgeworth, 1815-1838, with one 1816 letter to Lazarus from Edgeworth's father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth. In a September 1823 letter, Maria Edgeworth described her friendship with Sir Walter Scott. There are also several 1831 letters that reference the Southampton, Va., slave insurrection led by Nat Turner; correspondence between Maria Edgeworth and Rachel Mordecai Lazarus and Alfred Mordecai following Rachel Mordecai Lazarus's death in 1838; a sketch of Edgeworthstown, Maria Edgeworth's residence in Ireland; a lithograph of Richard Lovell Edgeworth; and two 1907 letters between Rosa Mordecai and Civil War author Morris Schaff.

Manuscript, in several hands, of a collection of several hundred entries, primarily poems and newspaper clippings on elegiac, sentimental, or lighthearted subjects. The collection includes verse epitaphs on an infant and on the death of Princess Charlotte, as well as an address to a mother on the death of a sweet girl aged 12 years. Other poems include those by George Byron, Walter Scott, and Robert Southey, as well as unattributed poems on remembrance, absence, and the Bible. Several poems are attributed to George De Boseo Attwood, aged 12 and 13 years, including one written to his mother. The volume also contains many lighthearted and satirical pieces, including numerous riddles, puns, anagrams, and conundrums; a poem satirizing William Shenstone; and a humorous glossary of common words. One anecdote is labeled "related to me by Miss Edgeworth the authoress." Several printed works are also bound in to the volume, including two missionary pamphlets reporting on India and Sierra Leone and an excerpt from Laurence Sterne's Sentimental journey. Laid in to the volume are two pieces of paper addressed to "Miss Careless," including one dated 1812, signed Catherine Murray, which includes numerous personal details about the correspondents.
