Quartermaster-general of the U.S. army, 1818-1860. Appointed commander of U.S., Georgia, and Alabama troops fighting the Creeks in Alabama, May 19, 1836, and of the army in Florida during the Second Seminole War, Dec. 6, 1836.
Thomas Sidney Jesup was a soldier in the U.S. Army. He rose to the rank of Major General. He served in the War of 1812 and was appointed Quarter Master General in 1818. In 1836 he was assigned to command U.S. troops and troops from Georgia and Alabama operating against the Creek Indians. In December of that year he succeeded to the command of the army in Florida. He was wounded in 1838 in a fight with the Seminole Indians, after which he assumed his duties as Quarter master General, a position he held for the remainder of his life. John Munroe was a Lieutenant at the time. He served in three campaigns against the Indians in Florida and in the War with Mexico. He rose to the rank of Colonel. He was the military and civil governor of Mexico, October 1849 - December 1850.
T.S. Jesup (1788-1860) was a career Army officer. He served as Quartermaster from 1818-1826 and again from 1836 until his retirement. He served in Florida during the Seminole War (see DAB). He is responsible for setting up the office of the Quartermaster General.
Army officer, from Berkeley County, Va. (now W. Va.).
U.S. Army officer and quartermaster general.
General Thomas Sidney Jesup (1788-1860) was the third general to command Florida troops during the Second Seminole War. Jesup, a career military man, served 18 years as Quartermaster General before President Andrew Jackson called him to active duty during the Indian Wars.
He was assigned to go to Alabama, where he led a successful campaign to capture and remove hostile Creek Indians from the frontier. In Florida during this time, Governor-General Richard K. Call was having difficulties organizing and launching a campaign against the Seminole Indians. President Jackson directed Jesup to proceed to Florida upon completion of his business in Alabama and take command "unless General Call is in the field." When Jesup arrived in Florida in September of 1836, Call had finalized arrangements for a campaign against the Seminoles. Not willing to usurp Call's position, Jesup declined command but volunteered to serve under him. In December, however, the command was officially transferred to Jesup, and Governor Call returned to the duties of his office.
In a directive from General Benjamin Butler, then Secretary of War, Jesup was ordered to attack hostile Indians in their stronghold on the banks of the Withlacoochee and drive them from established posts at or near the mouth of the Withlacoochee, at Fort King, and at Volusia. Ultimately, he was to see to the "subrogation and removal" of the Indians. This "removal" referred to the migration of Indians to reservations west of the Mississippi River.
Quartermaster General.
As Major General (1836-1838) General Jesup superseded Brigadier-General Richard Keith Call in command of the army in Florida, having at his command some eight thousand troops, after many exasperating experiences in which he was severely wounded in the face, Jesup finally took Osceola prisoner and confined him to Fort Moultrie until his death in January 1838. Relieved by General Zachary Taylor in May 1838, General Jesup resumed his duties as quartermaster general at Washington.

Taylor, Zachary, 1784-1850. Letter, 1823 October 22, Baton Rouge, Louisiana [to] Genl. Thos. L. [i.e. S] Jesup, Q.M. Genl., U.S. Army, Washington City.
Title:
Letter, 1823 October 22, Baton Rouge, Louisiana [to] Genl. Thos. L. [i.e. S] Jesup, Q.M. Genl., U.S. Army, Washington City.
Responds to letter of 17th ult. from Gen. Jesup on the character of Lt. B[arker?] as reported by Kummer, and defends Lt. B as well as other officers under his command: "at the time the occurrence in question, as stated by Kummer, took place I was at the summer cantonment a short distance from this place, & on that day the citizens of B. Rouge & its vicinity, gave the officers of the 1st Regt., most of whom was on the way of leaving here for the Missouri, a public dinner at which it is possible Lt. B as well as some others of the party might have indulged a little too freely, & as Kummer kept a public house some little irregularities might have taken place ... Kummer has left this place & I find on inquiry his character for truth very questionable." Also acknowledges receiving "your communication of the 2nd. Augt. enclosing a letter of Apt. for Capt. Young as Asst. Q Master ... & as he had left this for Cantonment Jesup, it was immediately forwarded to him ..."

Weedon, Frederick, 1784-1857. Family papers, 1818-1951.
Title:
Family papers, 1818-1951.
Papers, 1818-1951, consisting chiefly of diary fragments and letters. The collection was acquired through two separate accessions many years a part. The collection remains divided according to accession because each accession was transcribed by different transcribers. The first accession includes diary fragments from 1836 concerning Frederick Weedon's treatment of victims of injuries, sickness, and wounds during the Seminole War of 1836, concentrating especially on his treatment of Chief Osceola. He also notes the cause of death of many soldiers and Native Americans and discusses some of his conversations with and observations of Osceola and other Native Americans. In addition to the diary fragments, there are letters, 1818-1840, which are to, from, or about Weedon family members and subjects discussed include settlement and homelife in the 1820s and 1830s; the Solon Moore case with Ala. governor Gabriel Moore; arms received from free blacks in 1835; the Seminole War of 1836 and the militia raised in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; the need for forgiveness and absence of prejudice; the negotiations in Apr. and May 1837 between Gen. Jesup and the Seminole Indians about their abiding by an agreement reached earlier, and the Seminoles' non-compliance; the death of Osceola in 1838; and the personal attack J. D. Wescott made on Weedon in 1840. The second accession consists of 66 items, 1823-1951, most of which have been transcribed by Patricia R. Wickman, author of Osceola's Legacy. It is divided into two sub-series: the Frederick Weedon papers, 1823-1849; and the Hamilton M. Weedon papers, 1854-1951. The Frederick Weedon papers consist of 16 items, chiefly letters to Weedon. Of particular interest are Weedon's diary fragments describing the death of Osceola and three certifications attesting to Weedon's possession of the head of Osceola. In an 1839 letter, L.N. Fowler inquires whether Weedon would be willing to part with the heads of Osceola and Uchee Billy. Also of interest is a letter, 15 Oct. 1832, from Francis Cash describing a potential duel between James D. Westcott and Thomas Baltzell. Accompanying the letter is a document establishing rules for the duel as well as date and place. Other letters concern military and Indian activity in and around St. Augustine from 1835-1837. A small notebook describes a journey to Memphis in 1823. It also has inventories of personal and household items as well as receipts for slave sales. This series includes two fragments of 1832 letters written in French by Antoinette Martin to James G.L. Martin. Their connection to the Weedons is unknown. The Hamilton M. Weedon papers, 1854-1951, consist chiefly of letters to Hamilton and includes two letters from his father Frederick. An 1854 letter from Frederick refers to money for Hamilton to obtain his M.D. There is a small card indicating that he attended medical lectures at the Albany Medical College in 1855. Also of interest is an 1858 passport issued by the Spanish Consul in Key West, Fla., permitting Dr. H.M. Weedon to travel to Cuba. Several items concern Weedon's service as a Confederate Surgeon. Included among these are measurements for his uniform and a "Certificate of Disability" for Pvt. Warren D. Jackson. Post-Civil War letters chiefly concern family affairs.

DuVal, Benjamin T., 1822-1905. Benjamin T. DuVal family papers, 1816-1957.
Title:
Benjamin T. DuVal family papers, 1816-1957.
The papers consist of letters, a diary, speeches, essays, photographs, and other materials pertaining to the DuVal family. The letters include three folders of military correspondence primarily dealing with the career of Brigadier General Matthew Arbuckle, probably collected by his aide, Francis N. Page. These letters pertain to military activities during the First Seminole War, the Texas revolution of 1836, and the operation of posts at Fort Gibson and Fort Smith during the 1830s and 1840s. Correspondents include Andrew Jackson, Thomas S. Jesup, and Edmund P. Gaines. An additional seven folders of letters document Benjamin DuVal's courtship with Ellen Field in the 1840s, Confederate Army service, and postwar legal and political career. Among these letters are those written by William DuVal, James F. Fagan, William Cabell, Augustus Garland, Elias C. Boudinot, and Thaddeus H. Caraway. The bulk of the twentieth century letters pertain to Marie DuVal Johnston, Bejamin's daughter. The diary in the collection was kept by Catherine DuVal Rector from 1850-1853. Essays and speeches include those written by Benjamin DuVal and William Cabell. Photographs are of the DuVal family and friends, along with two early views of Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Title:
Papers, 1787-1860.
This collection consists military and other papers of Gen. Thomas Sidney Jesup relating mainly to the War of 1812, The Seminole War, and the Mexican War. It contains correspondence between Jesup and Major Willson, Hugh McCall, William Linnard, James Brown, L.P. Heintzelman, William Schley, and William Ballard Preston, among others. Topics are mostly related to military matters and relations with the Creeks and Seminoles. A detailed memoir by Jesup entitled "Memoir of the Campaigne on the Niagara" complements a similar item in the Jacob Jennings Brown Papers. Combined, the two memoirs yield a stunning overview of the Niagara Campaign, and also point to interesting areas of disagreement. Also included in the collection are two items from Washington, D.C., dated 1831. One represents the sale of 21 slaves to Jesup, while the other is the official District of Columbia authorization for such a sale, which is on Department of State Letterhead, and is signed by Secretary of State Edward Livingston. Additionally, the collection contains an 1813 article of agreement between Jesup and Brintnel Robins of Penn., who contracted to supply 65 boats for the U.S. troops. The boats were intended for the expedition that later led to the Battle of the Chippewa.
