Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a Missouri Democrat who served as a senator from 1821 to 1851. He opposed both abolitionism and the extension of slavery into new territories, but was a staunch advocate of westward expansion of the United States. He died in 1858. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States.
