Letter, 1823 October 22, Baton Rouge, Louisiana [to] Genl. Thos. L. [i.e. S] Jesup, Q.M. Genl., U.S. Army, Washington City.

Responds to letter of 17th ult. from Gen. Jesup on the character of Lt. B[arker?] as reported by Kummer, and defends Lt. B as well as other officers under his command: "at the time the occurrence in question, as stated by Kummer, took place I was at the summer cantonment a short distance from this place, & on that day the citizens of B. Rouge & its vicinity, gave the officers of the 1st Regt., most of whom was on the way of leaving here for the Missouri, a public dinner at which it is possible Lt. B as well as some others of the party might have indulged a little too freely, & as Kummer kept a public house some little irregularities might have taken place ... Kummer has left this place & I find on inquiry his character for truth very questionable." Also acknowledges receiving "your communication of the 2nd. Augt. enclosing a letter of Apt. for Capt. Young as Asst. Q Master ... & as he had left this for Cantonment Jesup, it was immediately forwarded to him ..."
