Title:
Letters from England, 1837-1838.
Records the trip that Thomas Sully and Blanche took to London. The two volumes include copies of 14 letters from each of the two to their family in Philadelphia. The letterbooks were compiled by Jane Sully, another of Thomas Sully's daughters; the original letters have apparently been lost. Each letter is lengthy and full of detail about where the Sullys lived in London; encounters with the British art establishment of the 1830s and with other American artists; dining with members of the Audubon family; a trip to France; portrait commissions, including the one negotiated with Queen Victoria; viewing art exhibitions; the experiences of a young woman abroad for the first time; and domestic considerations concerning clothing and the household routine. Also included is a plan of the rooms of the house on Great Marlborough St. in London, where Sully and Blanche stayed in 1838.

Title:
Letters, 1829-1879.
The collection comprises 20 letters, one print and the photocopy of a press clipping from 1863 regarding Cooke's donation to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The etching, dated London 1829, is from the Fifty plates of shipping and craft published in 12 parts by Edward Cooke "under the superintendence" of his father, George Cooke, in 1828-1829. Several letters dated between 1862 and 1873 were sent to friends inviting them to dinner, or to see his pictures before they were sent to exhibitions. Others refer to donations to charities or memorial funds. A dinner invitation to Sir Edwin Landseer asks him to fetch his horns and see Cooke's Venetian glass (1865 July 18). A printed invitation to a Miss Loddiges to a garden party was presumably sent to Jane Loddiges whom the artist married in 1840.

His many friendships with significant figures in the literary and political circles of Victorian London resulted in this collection of correspondence. The Abraham Hayward Correspondence Files are chiefly comprised of letters addressed to Abraham Hayward by various English writers, politicians and society figures between 1831 and 1884. Among the correspondents represented are: Lord Brougham, lord chancellor; John Wilson Croker, politician and writer; Isaac D'Israeli, writer; W. E. Gladstone, prime minister and author; Letitia Elizabeth Landon, poet; Edward Bulwer-Lytton, writer and politician; Lady Sydney (Owenson) Morgan, novelist and hostess; Count D'Orsay, man of fashion; Samuel Rogers, poet; and William Makepeace Thackeray, novelist. A few items in the Files are letters addressed to recipients other than Hayward, some apparently collected by him as autographs.

Reporting that he has finished the woodblock (of the illustration for Allingham's poem "The Maids of Elfen Mere") and discussing the publication of Allingham's poems. Mentioning that Moxon asked him to contribute designs (with Millais, Hunt, Landseer, Stanfield, Maclise, Creswick, Mulready and Horsley) for the new edition of Tennyson, and noting that he finds drawing on wood to be "particularly trying to the eyes." Mentioning that he began his class at the Working Men's College the previous evening, noting that it is "quite a separate thing from Ruskin's who teaches foliage." Mentioning that Miss Howitt and Barbara Smith are both ill and alluding to Miss Siddal's health, remarking that she "bears the cold weather ... and of course progresses always as an artist." Mentioning Woolner, Millais, Hunt, Ruskin, and other mutual acquaintances. Remarking on his translation of Italian poetry and copying out his sonnet "A Dark Day" (first line: "The gloom which breathes upon me with these airs").

Title:
Autograph letter signed : Higham, to William Macready, 1866 Feb. 2.
Discussing the difficulties of settling on a reading schedule, and mentioning a successful reading in Islington. Mentioning the health of his family, referencing Charles Collins' recovery. Discussing a shipwreck and the theater. Discussing Macready's age and health, noting that Dickens doesn't dispute his right to be "a little (a very little, mind!) infirm," but jokingly noting that Forster is 84 and still "ferociously gouty," that Wilkie Collins is 77 "but very cheerful," and that Edwin Landseer "attained (by nerves) his hundred and twenty eighth birthday." Noting that he intends to write to Mrs. Macready to propose a visit and to Katie, "about her little book" [Devotional Lays, published 1869].
