Livingston's varied career as American lawyer and statesman is described in detail in the following descriptions of his papers.
Eminent jurist - Minister to France - Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson.
Edward Livingston served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp (1814-1815) and helped secure the assistance of the Lafitte brothers. Livingston also served as US Senator from Louisiana (1828-1831).
Son of Robert R. Livingston. Mayor of New York, member of Congress from New York and later from Louisiana, senator from Louisiana, U.S. secretary of state and minister to France.
Senator, Secretary of State, Diplomat.
Edward Livingston graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1781, was admitted to the bar in 1785, and practiced law in New York City. He was U.S. Representative for New York (1795-1801), U.S. district attorney (1801-1803), and mayor of New York City (1801-1803). Livingston moved to New Orleans, La., in 1804 where he was engaged in the practice of law and in the real estate business, authored a legal code for Louisiana, and served at the Battle of New Orleans. He was U.S. Representative for Louisiana (1823-1829), U.S. Senator for Louisiana (1829-1831), U.S. Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President Andrew Jackson (1831-1833), and Minister Plenipotentiary to France (1833-1835).
A native of "Clermont", Columbia County, N.Y., Edward Livingston was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1795. Having migrated to New Orleans, La., in 1804 he began the practice of law. He was elected to the Louisiana Legislature in 1820 and was commissioned to revise the penal law which he presented to the Legislature in 1825. Elected to Congress in 1822 representing the New Orleans District, he served until 1828 when he was elected U.S. Senator from Louisiana.
As a close friend and ally to Andrew Jackson, he was appointed U.S. Secretary of State in 1831, a post he resigned May 29, 1833 to accept the position of Minister of France.

Edwin James was born at Weybridge, Vt., and graduated from Middlebury College in 1816. He studied medicine with his brother, Dr. John James, and later studied botany and geology with John Torrey and Amos Eaton. James was appointed surgeon and biologist for the Maj. Stephen H. Long Expedition of 1820. This party explored the West for the headwaters of the Platte and Red rivers, made maps of the uncharted Louisiana Territory, and located sites for military posts to protect the American fur trade. James is said to have been the first white man to climb Pike's Peak in Colorado, doing so in 1820, and he was the first botanist to examine the alpine flora of the Rocky Mountains. He later served as assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army (1823-1833), editor of the Albany, N.Y., Temperance Herald and Journal (1833-1836), and subagent to the Potawatomi Indians (1837-1838).

Title:
McDonogh, John, papers, 1801-1830.
Papers include three letters addressed to John McDonogh, two letters addresses to Edward Livingston, one power of attorney for the inhabitants of St. Marie, two bills of sale for slaves and one bill of sale for raw sugar. Two letters addressed to McDonogh from his father discuss personal observations about the James Wilkinson/Aaron Burr situation and convey the father's support for Wilkinson (1807). One letter addressed to McDonogh, signed McCaleb, mentions the case of McDonogh vs. Theodore Tregre and the current slave situation (1829). Two letters from McDonogh to Edward Livingston stress the need for legislation to clear titles to land in Florida. These letters also discuss the wish to free people of color to emigrate to another country and convey McDonogh's desire to assist them (1830). The power of attorney relates to the protection of property in St. Marie during the case between John Gravier and New Orleans (1806).

Du Pont, Charles I. (Charles Irénée), 1797-1869. Papers, 1807-1892.
Title:
Papers, 1807-1892.
While most of his correspondence is personal, there are observations on political and military matters in letters to his brother, Samuel Francis Du Pont. Business records of Charles I. du Pont & Co. include accounts and notes and a list of employees subscribing to a fund for an injured co-worker. Other representative elements include correspondence with James J. Barclay, of Philadelphia, a friend of many years, and with Louis Paul D'Autremont, the Comte de Menou, and Edward Livingston concerning claims of the Comte de Coëtlogon and the heirs of John Law (1671-1729) to lands included in the Louisiana Purchase. Charles I. du Pont appears to have succeeded his father as agent for the French claimants in the United States, when they petitioned Congress on the subject. Livingston was a member of Congress at the time from Louisiana. Law's financial operations, which ended in the "Mississippi Bubble", included the acquisition of a vast estate in what is now Arkansas.

There are letters to Ingersoll by many public men of the period, 1812-1847, on a wide range of national and foreign policy topics. Of these, some 300 are by Richard Rush, a close friend of Ingersoll. Almost one-half of the Rush letters were written while he was Comptroller of the U. S. Treasury, 1812-1814, and have to do especially with the War of 1812. The remainder were written while Rush was minister to Great Britain, 1817-1825, Secretary of the Treasury, 1825-1829, private citizen, 1829-1847, minister to France, 1848, and discuss domestic and international affairs, especially Anglo-American relations. Ingersoll correspondence also contains: letters, 1814-1837 by John Forsyth, a member of Congress, Minister to Spain, Governor of Georgia, and Secretary of State; letters, 1846-1848, from English author Sarah Mytton Maury concerning personal and political matters in the United States and England; and letters, 1814-1830, by James Monroe, principally pertaining to loans of money to Monroe. Several public figures are represented by five to ten letters each: John Quincy Adams, 1821, 1831-1832; John Binns, publisher of the Democratic Press, 1813, on the War of 1812 and the publication of political matters in newspapers; James Buchanan, 1838, 1839, 1843; James Burn, army officer, 1813, on military and naval action against the British forces; John C. There are: letters, 1803-1846, by Ingersoll on politics, diplomacy, and economic and legal matters; Ingersoll's diary, February 1823; and manuscript notes by Ingersoll for projected work on "Slavery," "The Origins of the War with Mexico, 1846-1848," and a "History of the Territories of the United States." Vail family. Papers, 1803-1888.
Title:
Papers, 1803-1888.
The Vail family papers relate chiefly to the personal life and professional career of Aaron Vail (1796-1878). These papers include correspondence and diaries along with a wide array of financial, legal, and estate records. The correspondence of Aaron Vail (1796-1878) is generally personal in nature and addressed mostly to his family. His career with the State Department is mentioned frequently in his letters, particularly his time of service at the legation in London during the 1830s, and later at Madrid from 1840 to 1842. Many of the letters are written in French, since a number of the Vail's had been married into French families and spent much of their life living in France. The collection also includes correspondence, account books, wills, inventories, and other papers relative to the settlement of the estate of various family members. Aaron Vail was the executor of the estate of his brother Eugene who died in 1843. Later, Aaron Vail Jr. was primarily responsible for settling his father's estate. Likewise, D. Thomas Vail handled the estate of his father George Vail. Correspondents include John E. Wool, Edward Livingston, William Henry Trescot, Washington Irving and James Buchanan. These papers contain discussions of international relations, trade and commerce. Many of the family papers deal with private family matters such as finances, health, and employment..
