McDonogh, John, papers, 1801-1830.

Papers include three letters addressed to John McDonogh, two letters addresses to Edward Livingston, one power of attorney for the inhabitants of St. Marie, two bills of sale for slaves and one bill of sale for raw sugar. Two letters addressed to McDonogh from his father discuss personal observations about the James Wilkinson/Aaron Burr situation and convey the father's support for Wilkinson (1807). One letter addressed to McDonogh, signed McCaleb, mentions the case of McDonogh vs. Theodore Tregre and the current slave situation (1829). Two letters from McDonogh to Edward Livingston stress the need for legislation to clear titles to land in Florida. These letters also discuss the wish to free people of color to emigrate to another country and convey McDonogh's desire to assist them (1830). The power of attorney relates to the protection of property in St. Marie during the case between John Gravier and New Orleans (1806).
