Title:
L.C. (Louis Christiaan) Kalff materials relating to the Philips Pavilion at the Brussels Universal and International Exhibition, 1955-1958.
Designed by Le Corbusier and his collaborator Iannis Xenakis, the Pavillon Philips was based on the idea of L.C. Kalff. There remains some question as to whether Xenakis or Le Corbusier should receive credit for the design of the building. The pavilion, which was ultimately declared unstable and destroyed, was designed as a shell structure composed entirely of prestressed concrete in the form of hyperbolic paraboloids individually cast to fit a complex framework of steel cables. The expressed object of the pavilion was to demonstrate the capabilities of modern technology in engineering, electro-acoustics, electronics, and automatic control techniques. The building was designed and equipped for an automatic performance of a spectacle in light and sound entitled "le poeme electronique" which was conceived and written by Le Corbusier and included the music of Edgard Varese. The collection includes correspondence, architectural drawings, photographs, color slides, painted glass plates and a script for "le poeme electronique."

Autograph letter signed, 1914 May 1.
To an unidentified correspondent, recommending the composer Edgard Varèse, "tout particulierement mon jeune confrère Edgard Varèse. C'est un musicien enthusiaste, qui peut rendre le grande service a la musicque moderne qu'il connait et comprendre." Varese was 30 years old at the time, and a graduate of the Schola Cantorum and the Conservatoire. He moved from Paris to Berlin in 1907, but made several visits back to Paris over the next few years, "meeting and impressing Rolland and Debussy... He was unable to secure a permanent position and on 18 Dec. 1915 he took ship for the USA." [From dealer description and THE NEW GROVE, vol. 19 p. 520.].

Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G. The files contain pre-publication and published music materials, including annotated manuscript and holograph scores, edited score paste-ups, and negative and positive proof copies. The music materials contain works by many leading 20th century composers, such as John Cage, Charles Ives, Carl Ruggles, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ernst Toch, Edgar Varèse, and Arnold Schoenberg. Latin American composers, such as Carlos Chávez, and various European and Soviet composers are represented as well. In addition, the files contain correspondence with composers and publishing associates, including a significant amount from members of New music's editorial board, such as Elliott Carter, Henry Cowell, Wallingford Riegger, Nicolas Slonimsky, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and Frank Wigglesworth. The files also include music and various editions from other publishers with whom Langinger worked, namely his own Golden West Music Press in Hollywood, Calif., Delkas Music Publishing Company, and Affiliated Musicians, Inc.
