Victoria Sackville-West (1892-1962), English poet, novelist, and author of books on gardening, known for her association with the Bloomsbury group and the gardens she designed at Sissinghurst Castle.
Vita Sackville-West was an English novelist, poet, and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her early work was published by Virginia and Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press. Lionel Edward Sackville-West was the third Baron Sackville, a British title he inherited on the death of his uncle, the diplomat Lionel Sackville-West, second Baron Sackville. He married his first cousin Victoria Sackville-West in 1890. Vita Sackville-West was their only child.

Wife of Sir H Nicolson
Epithet: afterwards Nicolson, writer
Vita Sackville-West and Violet Trefusis (née Keppel) met at a party in the winter of 1905, when Violet was ten and Vita twelve. From the beginning, their relationship was intense, and the constant travels of both families created the necessity of an ongoing and voluminous correspondence (Vita's early letters to Violet were burned by Violet's husband, Denys Trefusis, on their honeymoon).
The friendship became a love affair in 1918, well after Vita's marriage to Harold Nicolson in 1913. Violet herself married Major Denys Trefusis in 1919. Throughout the years 1918 to 1921, the correspondence continued. Violet, who was unhappy in her marriage, often begged Vita to run away with her. They did "elope" briefly to Paris in 1920, but Vita, whose marriage was a happy one, allowed herself to be "rescued" by her husband.
After another trip abroad with Violet in January 1921, Vita chose life with her husband and two sons over life with Violet. Denys Trefusis agreed not to divorce Violet, and she eventually went to live with him in Paris. Violet was forbidden to have any contact with Vita, although letters were exchanged through their mutual confidant, Pat Dansey (who herself became one of Vita's lovers). Slowly, the correspondence came to an end, and aside from a brief meeting at a party in 1924, the two women did not see each other again until 1940, when Violet fled France for England during World War II.
For more detailed biographical information about Violet Trefusis, see the register for the Violet Trefusis Papers (GEN MSS 427).

Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Priestly, Frederic Prokosch, Herbert Edward Read, Michael Redgrave, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, Henry Treece, and Evelyn Waugh.

Title:
104 autograph letters and postcards, signed to Lady Victoria Sackville-West from Vita Sackville-West and Lionel Sackville West, and one a.l.s. from Lady Victoria to Vita Sackville-West.
105 autograph letters and postcards signed sent to Lady Victoria Sackville-West from her daughter, Vita Sackville-West, from her husband, Lionel Sackville-West, and one letter from Lady Victoria Sackville-West to Vita Sackville-West. All but two of the letters written by Vita Sackville-West to her mother were written when she was between the ages of 17 and 20 and traveling on the Continent in 1909-1912. Of the remaining two letters, the first was penned when Sackville-West was a child, and the final letter was written in 1921, when she and her husband Harold Nicolson were traveling to Austria. There are two significant gaps in the correspondence: July 1909 - June 1911, and mid-June- mid-October 1912. Presumably Sackville-West was with her mother during these times. Also present are two letters that Sackville-West wrote to her father, Lionel, in 1909 and in 1912, and one letter each from Sackville-West's parents to her (in his letter, Lionel addresses Sackville-West as "Vitalet"). The letters reflect their composition during the romantic period of Sackville-West's life, an important episode of which was her tour of Europe. Dozens of the letters refer to Rosamund Grosvenor, an early romantic interest with whom she traveled. By the autumn of 1912, however, her affections had shifted to Harold Nicholson. Included here are two letters and a post office telegraph from him. Harold and Vita married in 1913. Four of the eight letters from Lionel Sackville to his wife, Lady Victoria Sackville were written between May and September 1909; the final four are dated March through November 1912.

Title:
Correspondence, 1922-1954.
Consists of letters to Dorothy Bussy (1950-1954), Thomas Roult (1922-1942), and unidentified correspondents (1930-1937). In the 13 letters to Bussy, Sackville-West discusses Virginia Woolf and other Bloomsbury members, and her book All Passion Spent. The six letters to Roult pertain to her giving him permission to use her poetry in his anthologies. The remaining five letters are thank you notes for books received and information regarding her heritage. Other collections at the HRC containing Victoria Sackville-West materials include: Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong (1937-1949), Clifford Bax (1946), Elizabeth Bowen (1938), Jocelyn Brooke (1950-1958), Richard Church (1936-1962), Contempo (1932), Rupert Croft-Cook (1958), Nancy Cunard (1921), Kay Dick (1947-1953), James Louis Garvin (1921-1936), Harley Granville-Barker (1935), John Lehmann (1934-1940), Marie Adelaide Bellock Lowndes (1933), Compton Mackenzie (1931), John Masefield (1949-1962), Lady Ottoline Morrell (nd), Peter Owen (1948), Herbert Edward Palmer (1930-1932), PEN (1933-1941), Frederic Prokosch (1930), Rolfe Arnold Scott-James (1938), Leonard Alfred George Strong (1929-1953), Edward Thomas (1931), Hugh Walpole (1918-1940), Denton Welch (1948-1952), and Geoffrey Harry Wells (1934). The majority of the materials are letters to and from Sackville-West, though there are some examples of her poems and reviews of other's works she wrote for the British Broadcasting Corporation. Topics include discussions about the Bloomsbury group, works by Sackville-West and others, personal information, visits, and gardening. The bulk of the materials are in the Church, Masefield, Strong, and Walpole collections. Sackville-West primarily discusses in her 21 letters to Church his works from 1936 to 1962. The King's Medal for Poetry is the focus of the 42 letters to Masefield from 1949 to 1962. Correspondence with Strong consists of 36 letters from 1929 to 1953 and are mostly personal, concerning her two sons, though there is also discussion about Strong's works. Sackville-West discusses publication of her works with Walpole from 1918-1940, as well as personal information about herself, her friends, and his works.

Autograph manuscript of untitled short story : Constantinople, 1914 Jan. 6-7.
This is a supernatural tale of a bronze serpent's head that is purchased at a stall in the Caledonian Market, the forerunner of South London's open-air Bermondsey Antiques Market. Unknown to the purchaser, Elsmere, it was a decorative support of the golden bowl that belonged to the Delphic Oracle, and which became detached from the bowl in Constantinople, eventually making its way to London. The Oracle is angered by the purchase and kills Elsmere in a fire.

Bridge, Ann, 1889-1974. Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
Title:
Papers, 1815-1973, (bulk 1905-1973).
The papers of Lady Mary Dolling Sanders O'Malley, who wrote under the pseudonym Ann Bridge, consist largely of her holograph manuscripts for books published from 1932 through 1973. Peripheral materials include manuscripts grouped as poems, short stories, articles, reviews, and lectures, as well as manuscripts of unpublished works. Also present are several groups of correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings and letters, and a few photographs. Though the papers chiefly concern Lady O'Malley's works and their publication, there is correspondence relating to her experiences as the wife of a diplomat, some of which were incorporated into her writings. These include her impressions while traveling in China (1925-27), Dalmatia (1930), Albania (1936), and Portugal (1946-47). Four very large files of correspondence, chiefly 1953-1954, represent her research for Portrait of My Mother, and contain extensive genealogical information concerning the Brooking, Day, and Sanders families. Among this research material are some originals and transcripts of early family letters, 1815-1898. Numerous letters from family, friends, fans, agents, publishers, and others are present. Among some of the notable correspondents are Lord Edgar Douglas Adrian, Sir Leopold Amery, Maurice Baring, Lord Ronald Gorell Barnes, Lord Max Beaverbrook, John Betjeman, Laurence Binyon, Sir Nevile Bland, Gordon Bottomley, Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham, Lord George Derwent, Morris L. Nicolson, Harold George, Sir, 1886-1968. Harold Nicolson letters to Arthur Nicolson and Mary Nicolson, 1894-1936.
Title:
Harold Nicolson letters to Arthur Nicolson and Mary Nicolson, 1894-1936.
Collection consists of approximately 600 letters from Sir Harold George Nicolson to his parents, Baron Arthur Nicolson Carnock and Mary Katherine Nicolson (née Hamilton). There are six undated letters from Nicolson's early childhood, dating from as early as the mid 1890s, otherwise letters are clearly dated from 1907 to 1936, spanning Nicolson's days as a student at Oxford University, his career in the British foreign service, to life back in England as a new member of Parliament. The letters dating from 1909 to 1929 document Nicolson's diplomatic life through postings in Madrid, Constantinople, Paris, Tehran, and Berlin. In his letters Nicolson discusses events in these countries, Great Britain's foreign policy, personal involvement in major political events, including the Paris Peace Conference and the coronation of the Shah of Iran, and relationships with contemporary figures such as U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, British Prime Minister James Ramsey MacDonald, and John Maynard Keynes. Nicolson also reports on his wife Victoria Sackville-West, her literary development and associations, and their sons. Accompanied by printed ephemera, including a School Roll dating from 1894.

James Lees-Milne papers, 1907-1997
Title:
James Lees-Milne papers 1907-1997
The James Lees-Milne Papers contain correspondence, writings, and other papers of the author. The papers span the years 1907-1997, with the bulk falling between 1930-1997. Series I, Correspondence, is the most extensive, and documents Lees-Milne's relationships with a wide circle of close friends, social and literary acquaintances, publishers, the National Trust, his family and his wife's family. The majority of correspondents are members of the British aristocracy and of Britain's literary elite. Among his most frequent correspondents were John Betjeman, John Spencer Churchill, Patrick Kinross, Edward Sackville-West, Sacheverell Sitwell, James Pope-Hennessy, Harold Nicolson, Rosamond Lehmann, Anne Hill (Lady Anne Gathorne-Hardy), Diana (Mitford) Mosley, Eardley Knollys, John Kenworthy-Browne, Richard Stewart-Jones and Stuart Preston. Other correspondents include Ivy Compton-Burnett, Elspeth Huxley, Lady Kathleen Kennett (widow of Admiral Scott), Alan Pryce-Jones, his literary executor Michael Bloch, and many other literary friends, nobility, and prominent figures in the arts. Series II, Writings, contains manuscripts, contracts, background research material, and reviews of Lees-Milne's published diaries, writings on architectural history, biographies, novels, memoirs, and shorter works such as magazine articles and obituaries. Manuscripts for the earlier diaries are not present; for 1946-47 and 1953-78, there are corrected typescripts that contain material not included in the published versions. The most extensive background material is for Lees-Milne's two-volume biography of Harold Nicolson: this includes a small body of Nicolson's correspondence to his secretary, business associates, several friends, including Leonard and Virginia Woolf, and his wife Vita Sackville-West. Background material for Lees-Milne's The Age of Inigo Jones includes one of the pocket notebooks he carried with him on visits to National Trust properties in the 1940s. Series III, Other Papers, contains certificates, invitations, a list of books read 1962-96, ephemera, which includes a bookplate showing the Lees-Milne coat of arms, and clippings. The majority of the clippings are obituaries of Lees-Milne's friends and family, but also present are interviews with and profiles of Lees-Milne himself, articles about the National Trust, about architecture and historic preservation, and about friends. Series IV, Photographs, contains snapshots of Lees-Milne and his family and friends from his childhood through the 1980s.

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

Autograph manuscript of untitled short story : [Sissinghurst Castle, Cranbrook, Kent, ca. 1935?].
The story of an obsessive automobile society traffic scout who is stationed at a quiet rural crossroads: "He knew nearly all the habitués of the road by sight: the doctor in his Studebaker, the solicitor in his high Ford, the local lord in his Rolls-Royce. He knew which bonnet [i.e., hood] bore the badge [of his automobile society] and which did not. The native snobbery of his soul concentrated entirely on cars, and the rest of the world seemed to lie beyond the constant cloud of dust raised by the passing wheels." The loneliness of his occupation slowly drives him insane. One day he sees two cars converging, each unaware of the other, neither bearing his society's badge. In a mad fury he signals to each that the road is clear. After the collision, the sight of "the bloody human debris" shocks the scout into reviving sanity and a horror at what he has done.
