This is a supernatural tale of a bronze serpent's head that is purchased at a stall in the Caledonian Market, the forerunner of South London's open-air Bermondsey Antiques Market. Unknown to the purchaser, Elsmere, it was a decorative support of the golden bowl that belonged to the Delphic Oracle, and which became detached from the bowl in Constantinople, eventually making its way to London. The Oracle is angered by the purchase and kills Elsmere in a fire.
