Sir Harold George Nicolson was born in Teheran and he spent his life in the diplomatic corps at posts in Berlin, Teheran, Constantinople, and Madrid. At the end of his diplomatic career Nicolson pursued a career in journalism and politics, during which time he served as a member of the National Liberal Party in Parliment.
