English classical scholar.
Epithet: of Stowe MS 208
Epithet: OM, classical scholar
British classical scholar.
Epithet: Dr; of Stowe MS 210
George Gilbert Aime Murray was born in Australia to aristocratic parents of Irish ancestry. He came to England with his mother and attended Oxford, becoming an eminent classical scholar and educator. He was also an author and translator, notable for preparing classical Greek plays for the modern stage. His translations were very creative, and carefully constructed to appeal to modern audiences, and the plays eventually found considerable success, both as productions and in print form, and were influential in reviving interest in Greek drama. Murray had numerous literary friendships, and his family served as models for the main characters in Shaw's Major Barbara.
Epithet: Dr; of Add MS 35734

Browne, Maurice, 1881-1955. Morley's First Sketch of English Literature papers, 1909 and 1936.
Title:
Morley's First Sketch of English Literature papers, 1909 and 1936.
The papers relate to Browne's preparation, commissioned by Cassell & Co., of an augmented edition of Henry Morley's A first sketch of English literature. They consist of letters and brief bio-bibliographical sketches by and about authors, and drafts, galley proofs, and page proofs of new sections by Browne. The last section on living authors was unfinished when the project was halted by Browne's illness. The 1912 "new and enlarged edition" contains none of Browne's material, and none was ever. published. Also included is correspondence from 1936, with Desmond Flower and H.F. Morley, concerning the possible publication of a small textbook on Victorian literature based largely on a portion of his old manuscript.

Murray, Gilbert, 1866-1957. Correspondence with Morley Roberts, 1913-1941.
Title:
Correspondence with Morley Roberts, 1913-1941.
The correspondence was initiated by Morley Roberts, who wrote to Gilbert Murray after reading Murray's book The rise of the Greek epic (2nd edition), and shared with him his reflections on the etymology of the Greek word pharmakos, including his speculation about its possible relationship to the Turkish word vourmak. The total of 8 items in 1913 relate to the discussion of this etymology. Enclosed with Murray's letter of 6 September 1913 is a letter written to him by D. S. Margoliouth (dated 4 September 1913), in response to a query from Murray that appealed to Margoliouth's expertise in Turkish. For closely related correspondence from Max Montesole to Roberts in the same year, mainly concerning the Turkish word vourmak, see correspondence file for Montesole (Folder 101). The remaining correspondence between Roberts and Murray, dated 1916 to 1941, includes exchanges on a variety of topics, often related to what one or the other of them is writing. Murray reads and responds to many of Roberts's works, including Time and Thomas Waring, The private life of Henry Maitland; Warfare in the human body; The serpent's fang; and Women and ships. Letters in 1922 touch upon H. G. Wells (June) and W. H. Hudson (August). In November 1922 Murray refers to his support of Roberts's application for a civil list pension (for documents concerning that pension, see Folder 146). Regarding Roberts's artwork there is mention of a sketch of Oxford (July 1922) and his Exmoor pictures (December 1935).

Title:
Bronislaw Malinowski papers, 1869-1946 (inclusive), 1914-1939 (bulk).
The papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts of writings and lectures, fieldwork notebooks, photographs, memorabilia, and other papers of Bronislaw Malinowski, cultural anthropologist, teacher, and author. These materials reflect in some detail various aspects of Malinowski's research and other professional work in the areas of cultural anthropology and ethnobiology as well as his professional and personal associations with anthropologists, psychologists, and sociologists in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the United States. Of particular interest are the field notebooks, photographs, and other materials related to his work among the natives of New Guinea and the Trobriand Islands. Also included are some papers of members of Malinowski's family. Correspondents of note include Havelock Ellis, Sir James Frazer, Marie Bonaparte, Ernest Jones, Elton Mayo, Charles G. Seligman, and Edvard Westermarck.

Title:
J.M. Dent & Sons records, 1834-1986 (author files L-M).
Author files L-M: Author files include correspondence with editorial department staff and with the directors of J.M. Dent & Sons that discusses manuscript proposals and submissions, book acceptance and rejection, editorial recommendations, contracts, copyright agreements, sales figures, royalty payments, legal problems, reprints, and successive editions. Author files also include correspondence regarding illustrations used in Dent publications, correspondence with illustrators, rough drafts of manuscripts, synopses of manuscripts, and photographs of selected authors and illustrators. Note that files are incomplete, since many items of significant commercial value were sold piecemeal in the 1980s and some files from later years are held by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, which took over the Dent firm in 1986.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
