Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin, the American Philosophical Society was the first learned society in the United States. For over 250 years, the Society has played an important role in American cultural and intellectual life. Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Society fulfilled the role of a national academy of science, national library and museum, and even patent office. Early members of the Society included Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Stephen Peter Du Ponceau, George Washington, and many other figures prominent in American history. The Archives of the American Philosophical Society consists of 192.25 linear feet of material, organized into thirteen record groups dating back to 1743. The Society's archives extensively documents not only the organization's historical development but also its role in American history and the history of science and technology.

The collection consists of a series of eight separate articles published in The Vineland Historical Magazine, the journal of the Vineland [NJ] Historical and Antiquarian Society in 1919-1920, Volumes IV and V. The articles comprise the edited diary of Riley Adams, a student who attended the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in Norwich, VT, the forerunner of Norwich University. The introduction to the published articles was written by Frank D. Andrews, then owner of the original journal. The published journal itself runs from 17 August-11 December 1824 and deals with the daily life of a homesick cadet as well as a pedestrian excursion to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A typed transcription of the journal articles was prepared in 1949 and is available with the collection.

Correspondence and papers, 1807-1826. The material includes personal papers and military records, many of them related to O'Connor's service during the War of 1812. The papers deal with his interest in trade prior to the war of 1812; his military service during the war, most of it as an officer in the Third New York Regiment of Artillery; his translation of Gay de Vernon's Traité élémentaire d'art militaire et de fortification, for which he received financial assistance from the U.S. War Department; courts martial; and personal correspondence and finances. Records dealing with his trade interests include bills of lading, one with a statement of O'Connor's U.S. citizenship attached. Court martial records include the records of O'Connor's trial in in 1815 on charges related to his feud with George Izard, and of the 1816 court of inquiry into Alden Partridge's conduct at West Point. Personal records include letters discussing his feud with Charles Anthony, and other quarrels, including one with James T.B. Romayne, which led to a formal challenge to a duel and a meeting at which Romayne apologized. There are also bills and receipts for himself and for Miss Eliza O'Connor, mostly from British or French merchants, and dating from his stay in France in 1818-1820. They include medical bills and prescriptions from French doctors, and printed ephemera, such as price lists and warranties, from various French and English merchants. There are other miscellaneous personal papers, such as visiting cards and a caricature. The military records include a bill for nurse's services rendered by Mrs. Sarah Blake to the Third Regiment in 1813; provision returns and duplicate receipts for public property, issued by O'Connor during 1812-1814, in his capacity as quartermaster of the Third Regiment; returns, muster rolls, morning reports, and similar papers, August-October 1814, dated at Fort Erie, Chippewa, Batavia, Sackett's Harbor, Chazy, Plattsburgh, and other places in New York State.

Chief, U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, first graduate. U.S. Military Academy, Superintendent, 1812-1814. Memoir includes a brief family history, details of service as an engineering cadet, memories of cadet days at the Military Academy from 1 October 1801 - 12 October 1802, describing the curriculum, Kosciusko's garden and professor George Barron. Later entries talk of the fire in the USMA Colonel's quarters, the contracts (6 Jan 1817) with John Forsyth of Newburgh for the construction of several brick quarters at West Point, orders, 13 Jan 1817, sent from Swift to Capt. Partridge telling the latter to resume function as Superintendent of USMA. Swift discusses the marriage of his sister to G.W. Whistler, and the bond of friendship between himself and Whistler, ties with J.L. Smith, Thomas Sully, William G. McNeill, Sylvanus Thayer, and G.W. Cullum as well as family matters. Duties as a civil engineer and travels are noted in Swift's memoirs.

The W. W. H. Davis Papers consist of correspondence, writings, journals, diaries, drawings, newspaper clippings, photographs, and memorabilia which document the life and career of W. W. H. Davis. The five scrapbooks chronicle Davis's participation in the Mexican War and Civil War, service in New Mexico, and his interest in Democratic party politics. The correspondence and memorabilia in the scrapbooks are arranged according to major themes. The autobiographical writings series contains essays on the Mexican War, and a memoir of the Mexican War. The personal papers include an extra-illustrated Life of John Davis, journals of trips west to Santa Fe, and a journal kept during the siege of Charleston in 1863-64.
