Correspondence and papers, 1807-1826. The material includes personal papers and military records, many of them related to O'Connor's service during the War of 1812. The papers deal with his interest in trade prior to the war of 1812; his military service during the war, most of it as an officer in the Third New York Regiment of Artillery; his translation of Gay de Vernon's Traité élémentaire d'art militaire et de fortification, for which he received financial assistance from the U.S. War Department; courts martial; and personal correspondence and finances. Records dealing with his trade interests include bills of lading, one with a statement of O'Connor's U.S. citizenship attached. Court martial records include the records of O'Connor's trial in in 1815 on charges related to his feud with George Izard, and of the 1816 court of inquiry into Alden Partridge's conduct at West Point. Personal records include letters discussing his feud with Charles Anthony, and other quarrels, including one with James T.B. Romayne, which led to a formal challenge to a duel and a meeting at which Romayne apologized. There are also bills and receipts for himself and for Miss Eliza O'Connor, mostly from British or French merchants, and dating from his stay in France in 1818-1820. They include medical bills and prescriptions from French doctors, and printed ephemera, such as price lists and warranties, from various French and English merchants. There are other miscellaneous personal papers, such as visiting cards and a caricature. The military records include a bill for nurse's services rendered by Mrs. Sarah Blake to the Third Regiment in 1813; provision returns and duplicate receipts for public property, issued by O'Connor during 1812-1814, in his capacity as quartermaster of the Third Regiment; returns, muster rolls, morning reports, and similar papers, August-October 1814, dated at Fort Erie, Chippewa, Batavia, Sackett's Harbor, Chazy, Plattsburgh, and other places in New York State.
