Records, 1789-1813, consisting mainly of correspondence, and papers presented at meetings of the Society. The records include: minutes of meetings during 1802-1813, at West Point and New York City; constitution; list of members; ca. 210 letters, mostly to the president, Col. Jonathan Williams, accepting or declining membership, proposing new members, sending donations or remittances, etc.; accounts of the society. The papers include a few documents in French, and deal mainly with scientific or geographical issues of military significance, for example: an explanation of the theory of M. Pothenot (trigonometry); a description of the falls of the Ohio River; Capt. Richard Whiley's survey of the harbor of Michilimackinac;remarks on Edward Clark's project of harbor defense; plans for fortifying the harbor of New York; report and plan of defense relative to the harbor of Cape Fear River, Noth Carolina; plan of Fort McHenry; Lt. Alden Prtridge's barometrical and thermometrical observations at West Point; principles of marine batteries; indent of necessary supplies for a company of horse artillery; sketch of Fort Constitution, Portsmouth, New Hampshire; dimensions of a parallel ruler gun; courses of the meanders of French Creek, Pennsylvania; draft of military regulations for government of the army; papers and memoranda relative to the surveys for building a fortification near Black Rock, on the Niagara; memorandum of survey of the fort at Presque Isle; Gen. Alexander Hamilton's plan for the establishment of a military academy, 1799; memoir of a new construction of a floating battery or double gun boat; memoranda of experiments in the carrying power of long and short muskets; sketch of Fort Pickering, Salem, Massachusetts; plan of Fort Independence, Boston; plan of the blockhouse at Marblehead, Massachusetts; a fort at Smithville, Cape Fear River; sketch of a fort on Bedloe's Island, New York; sketch at Fort Lilly, Gloucester, Cape Ann, Massachusetts; memorandum of the measurement of the harbor of Charleston,South Carolina, and the forts there; general descriptions of sundry forts; etc.
