Edward Crowell letters, 1839-1840.

The collection includes fifteen letters written by Edward Crowell to his parents, David (1794-1853) and Rebecca Griggs Crowell (1795-1869), and his brother Josiah B. Crowell (1823-1845), in New Jersey, between 24 May 1839 and 7 August 1840. The letters document the life of a cadet at Norwich University. In them, Edward Crowell reports on his studies, his financial obligations, the perils of early travel, the weather and his health. He often mentions Captain Alden Partridge and various pedestrian excursions. Typed transcriptions are available with the collection.

Edward Crowell was from Perth Amboy, NJ. He graduated from Norwich University in 1840 and pursued a career in civil engineering. William Arba Ellis's published history of Norwich indicates that Crowell had passed away by 1911, at which point he was survived by a niece, Edith B. Crowell.
