The collection consists of a letter wriiten by Henry W. Cushman to Dr. Elijah Carpenter in Bernardston, MA, on 19 October 1823. Cushman writes from the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in Norwich, VT of a march to Windsor earlier in the month where the cadets undertook a public exhibition of drill and Captain Alden Partridge presented lectures on the Battle of Waterloo and Education. Henry Cushman also mentions his course of studies at the Academy and a new series of military lectures by Captain Partridge.

Henry Cushman entered the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in 1823 and graduated in 1825. He was a native of Bernardston, MA, and following his graduation from the Academy returned there to pursue farming and teaching. Later Cushman became involved in various business pursuits and was active in local and state politics.
