Collection of papers relating to the Art Looting Investigation unit of the U.S. War Department's Office of Strategic Services, 1945-1946.
Collection contains 33 reports, memos, transcriptions issued by or collected by the Art Looting Investigation unit of the OSS, 1945-1946. Most of the material consists of reports generated by the unit: Detailed Interrogation Reports of German personnel involved in the theft and sale of confiscated art; a detailed report of the activity of the Einsatzstab Rosenberg in France, responsible for confiscating Jewish-owned collections in France. According to the report this was the "most elaborate and extensive art looting operation undertaken by the Germans in World War II." Other reports include one on the amassing of the Hermann Göring art collection and another on the Hitler Museum and Library. A Final Report by the unit provides a summary of the field operations 1945-1946 and includes an extensive list of names, with biographical information, of people involved in the confiscation or sale of art. Also included in the collection are lists of dealers involved in the confiscation, sale, or repatriation of art. A few papers are English transcriptions of Nazi reports and memos. Some reports have annotations. Most are marked confidential.

Title:
Cassie Connor collection, 1934-1969.
The papers include correspondence, photographs, postcards, shorthand notes, travel documents, and bound material. The correspondence in this collection is divided into two subsets. The first includes items received by James F. Byrnes between the years 1934-1958. Among these items are letters from political figures such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. In addition, there is a series of letters from notable Hollywood figures such as Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable. The second set of correspondence contains material that Cassie Connor either sent or received. These include received items from relatives stationed overseas during World War II and letters from Bernard Baruch. There are 127 photographs which depict Byrnes, Connor, and members of various U.S. delegations and political figures that accompanied them on diplomatic missions such as Potsdam in 1945 and the Paris Peace Conference in 1946. Of note are six postcards addressed to Hermann Göring, concerning the birth of his daughter Edda in 1938. These were found in the book "Hermann Göring Redun und Aufsätze" from this collection. It is unknown how Connor came into possession of these particular materials. Included in this collection are three pages of shorthand notes by Byrnes that were taken on July 4, 1946 [it should be noted that Byrnes used Pittman shorthand]. Connor's travel documents include a certificate of vaccination (1966), a diary (years 1959, 1961, and 1966), three passports, and an undated travel itinerary. There are three bound items within this collection. The first is a March 1947 edition of "South Carolina Magazine" which features an article entitled "Mister Justice: James F. Byrnes of South Carolina." The second and third items are related to the formation of the United Nations. One contains interim arrangements agreed upon in 1945 while the other is a bound copy of the charter itself.

Stefan Lorant collection, ca. 1869-1993 (bulk 1920-1992).
The Lorant collection represents significant aspects of Lorant's careers as filmmaker and pictorial history book author; his better known expertise as a picture magazine editor is less thoroughly documented. The core of the collection comprises photographs he collected of German history from the Bismarck era to the Nuremberg Trials (ca. 1871-1946). A smaller portion of the photo holdings consists of stills from Lorant's silent films and personal photos of himself, friends, and family. An extensive correspondence from his American years is primarily concerned with book projects.

Howe was director of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco for nearly 40 years, and he served as one of the Monuments Men in the Monuments, Fine Art and Archives (MFAA) Section of the U.S. Army during World War II. The collection documents Howe's MFAA work in Germany and Austria locating and recovering cultural artifacts and artwork stolen by the Nazis. There is significant correspondence with friends and colleagues, as well as fellow Monuments Men such as Samson Lane Faison, Edith Standen, and George Stout. The papers also includes reports, inventories of stolen artwork, maps, annotated photographs, a scrapbook, and photographs. The papers also document Howe's later work at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.Biographical materials include articles and memorial tributes for Howe's father and grandfather, a short autobiography and resume, and the certificate for the copyright to his book. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, the most voluminous of which are letters from Monuments Men S. Lane Faison, Patrick J. Kelleher, Andrew C. Ritchie, Edith Standen, George Stout, Marcelle Minet, Rose Valland, James Rorimer, and others. Additional correspondents include friends and colleagues such as Bernard Berenson, Hume Cronyn, Paul Mills, Christopher Forbes, Margaret Mallory, William A. McGonagle, and Otto Wittman, among many othersWritings include a brief summary of Howe's book <emph render="italic">Salt Mines and Castles</emph> and a sound cassette of his lecture about the book. Project, membership and travel files are primarily associated with his professional work at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and include documentation of member art trips, a feasibility study for merging the California Palace of the Legion of Honor with the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, and a membership list of the Bohemian Club. The Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) Records and Looted Inventories series contain many records relating to Howe's military service as a Monuments Man. There are several inventory records which contain lists of the contents of Hermann Göring's collection of looted artwork, artwork destroyed in the Flak towers fire in Berlin, and artwork held at several of the central collecting points, though mostly at Weisbaden. There is also a small fold out map of the Altausse salt mines; a U.S. government issued manual of maps marking important cultural monuments and artwork in Germany; a book of U.S. government regulations pertaining to the MFAA section; a government information bulletin; and several official status reports and published U.S. government reports about art looting investigations and safeguarding cultural property.Professional files consist of papers relating to Howe's job as the director of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and art trips he organized. Documents include a survey of Los Angeles museum curator salaries, a questionnaire about Howe's work as a museum director, and a membership list of Bohemian Club artists. The bulk of the travel papers are itineraries. The photographs are divided into two subseries: MFAA Section images and personal photographs. The Monuments Men subseries includes photographs documenting bomb damage to cultural monuments in various countries, though mainly Germany; U.S. soldiers transporting recovered artwork such as Michelangelo's <emph render="italic">Madonna and Child</emph> from the Altaussee salt mines in Austria, and other looted art repositories such as Neuschwanstein Castle and Berchtesgaden in Germany; Weisbaden and Munich collecting points; and art recovery of <emph render="italic">The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb</emph> by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. There are many photographs of the Monuments Men including Thomas Carr Howe, George Stout, Stephen Kovalyak, Lamont Moore, Patrick J. Kelleher, Edith Standen, and Rose Valland. Personal photographs consists of portraits of Howe and photographs of events, mostly formal dinners and parties.Printed materials are clippings, postcards, fundraising pamphlets, essays, and memorial tributes for colleagues.

Title:
Louis Paul Lochner papers, 1903-1972.
Correspondence, writings, diaries, and subject files of a Pulitzer Prize-winning news commentator, author, and foreign correspondent who was best known for his coverage of the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and World War II. General correspondence, 1911-1968, dates primarily from the decade 1945-1955, and is chiefly made up of letters from Germany. Among the few significant pre-war letters are exchanges with his family and several Associated Press executives. Also present are a number of literary manuscripts sent to Lochner by such people as Jakob Goldschmidt, Hans Hinrichs, Betty Hirsch, and James Mooney. Most of the correspondence is in German. A large body of articles, speeches, radio scripts, and book manuscripts document his journalistic career. News articles written for the Federated Press and the Associated Press cover the period 1920-1941, and deal mainly with Germany before and during World War II. There are also copies of stories filed by other members of the Berlin AP Bureau, 1940-1941. Free-lance magazine and newspaper articles and speeches span Lochner's entire career and related to his interest in the international student movement, opposition to World War I, Herbert Hoover, and the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. Radio scripts include news commentaries written for the NBC Pacific Coast Network, 1943-1944, and Broadcast Editorial Reports, 1960-1962. There are also drafts, notes, and reviews of "Tycoons and Tyrants," "Henry Ford--America's Don Quixote," "Always the Unexpected," "What about Germany?," and "Herbert Hoover and Germany," and correspondence relating to his editing of "The Goebbels Diaries" and the resultant controversy with the Office of Alien Property. Subject files concern other phases in Lochner's varied career, including work for the United Nations Expert Committee on Public Information, the Ford Peace Expedition, the Hoover Economic Mission to Germany and Austria, and the Overseas Press Club. Also part of the collection are personal diaries, chiefly 1939-1945; clippings; and material on interviews with Konrad Adenauer, Crown Prince Frederick William, Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Goering, Maxim Gorki, Rudolf Hess, Paul von Hindenburg, Adolf Hitler, Hermann Kayserling, Fritz Kreisler, Max Liebermann, Ludwig Martens, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Baldur von Schirach, and Wilhelm II. The collection is supplemented by recordings of many of Lochner's broadcasts and by several albums of news photographs. Lochner correspondents of note include Jane Addams, William Jennings Bryan, Lucius D. Clay, Kent Cooper, Albert S. Crockett, Dan DeLuce, Allen W. Dulles, Hugo Eckener, Henry Ford, Pauline Frederick, Ralph J. Frantz, J. Wes Gallagher, Hugh Gibson, Alan J. Gould, William P. Gray, Dag Hammerskjold, Ernest Hanfstaegle, Hans Hinrichs, Herbert Hoover, David Starr Jordan, Hans V. Kaltenborn, Paul U. Kellogg, John F. Kennan, Henry Cabot Lodge, Prince Louis Ferdinand, Ralph O. Nafziger, Arthur H. Sulzberger, Jr., and Woodrow Wilson; less frequent correspondents are listed in the unpublished register.

Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.
