William Tilghman papers, 1671-1876

Title: William Tilghman papers 1671-1876

Papers concerned with Tilghman's law practice in Chestertown, Md., and his service in the Maryland legislature (1788-1793). Includes genealogical information about Maryland's Eastern Shore, information about economic and agricultural conditions in Maryland in the late 18th century, Tilghman's vicissitudes because of his Loyalist sympathies during the Revolution, his efforts to advance the interests of his constituents while he served in the legislature, and the Tilghman family. Volumes include a digest of legal cases in which Tilghman participated, legal notes, court dockets, and a summary of estate laws in Maryland. Includes three letters from Henry Pearce. Two of these letters are to James Tilghman, William's father, regarding the purchase of Pearce land, slaves, stock, etc.

Shippen family. Papers, 1749-1860.

Title: Papers, 1749-1860.

Letterbook, 1753-1770, of William Allen, colonial Pennsylvania Chief Justice, concerns his business interests as partner of Allen and Turner, a merchant firm which was also active in iron manufacturing and copper mining. Much of the correspondence is with David Barclay & Son, London, to whom Allen also includes reports on the French and Indian War and the Pennsylvania 1764 election. The volume continues as Edward Shippen letterbook, 1782-1806, and relates to family lands and finances. Shippen writes to his daughter Margaret Arnold, his brother Joseph Shippen, brother-in-law James Tilghman, and nephew-in-law Jasper Yeates. A miscellany of Burd, Hubley, Shippen, and Yeates letters make up the loose correspondence. Although referring mostly to family activities, including the marriage of James Burd, Jr., to which his family objected. There are some references to public events among which is the arrival of the Indian delegation to the Mason-Dixon survey party in 1767. Some of the writers are Margaret Shippen Arnold, James Burd, and Sarah Shippen Burd and others.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792

Title: Burd-Shippen Papers 1708-1792

James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

(1765, Nov. 25) and the appointed speakers to argue "on the Affirmative" and "on the Negative;" commendations, and fines (mostly for "impious language," nonattendance, or "not speaking according to Appointment.")
