James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart, soldier, was born 6 February 1833, on "Laurel Hill" plantation, Patrick County, Virginia. He died 12 May 1864 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia. Stuart graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (1850); received his commission (1854); and transferred to the Cavalry (1855). He married Flora Cooke, a colonel's daughter, in 1855, and the couple had three children. Stuart became Robert E. Lee's aide (1859) and resigned from the U.S. Army to be commissioned a lieutenant-colonel in the Virginia Infantry and captain of the Confederate Cavalry (1861).

Letter written by Mair Pointon describing his regiment's efforts in fighting off a Rebel cavalry raid on his commander's wagon train. While near the Rappahannock River at Catlett's railroad station, they were attacked by Jeb Stuart's cavalry (parts of the 1st, 5th, and 9th Virginia Cavalry and a company of guerrillas). He goes on to describe how Gen. John Pope's headquarter's wagons were captured and burned. About half of his letter describes in great detail how his brigade, under Gen. John Gibbon, was able to circle their wagons, fight off the Rebels, and avoid capture.

General Rosser's Civil War letters to his wife Betty Barbara Winston Rosser avoid describing military encounters and dwell on his desire for promotion and transfer, his disagreements with James Ewell Brown Stuart, concern for his family's safety, & non-combat activities. He repeatedly avows that he will become a Christian & give up drinking, and was never previously married. Interspersed with personal letters are a few military ones including orders from Stuart and Wade Hampton regarding Valley campaigns. Post-war correspondence of Rosser and later of his son relates family activities in Virginia and Minneapolis. Among letters of interest are an enquiry from the Schofield Board reconsidering the Fitz-John Porter case, letters from Hampton and James Longstreet regarding Gettysburg, requests from Hampton, Longstreet and Gouveneur Kemble Warren on Rosser's position on certain dates, discussions by George Gordon Battle on obtaining coal lands options, and by Fitzhugh Lee on land speculation in Cuba and a letter from John W. Daniel on obtaining Rosser a Spanish American war command. The collection also contains a letter to Mrs. Rosser from Elizabeth Custer regarding Girls Club work and a statue of General Custer, wills from Hanover and Albemarle Counties, a 1902 description of Charlottesville, a 1900 survey of Rosser's Albemarle lands, and an 1871 map of railroad lands on the Missouri & Yellowstone rivers surveyed by Rosser. On 7 October 1862 Woodruff writes to "Brother & sister Len & Sarah" about the 20th's movements since its mustering-in at New Haven. He describes cheering citizens, temporary camp in Washington, D.C., and the current camp at Maryland Heights near Harper's Ferry on the Antietam battlefield where his troop burned unburied bodies from the battle. A carte-de-visite photograph of Woodruff accompanies the letter. On 15 January 1863 H.P. "Burr" Roberts writes to "Sarah" from Fairfax Station. He describes Burnside's "mud march," and a raid by J.E.B. Stuart on the Orange & Alexandria R.R., speculates on their next move, requests a box from home and notes that he is a member of the Color Guard.

There are detailed accounts of events, holiday visits with friends and relatives in Richmond and other parts of Virginia, two Union raids on Charlottesville (May 1863 and 1864), and courses. Cohen also describes the death of Carnot Posey, entertainment for J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry, his status with the Charlottesville draft board and individual students and courses. Correspondents include: Gratz Cohen of Ga., William Henry Lenoir of Tenn., Henry St. John Dixon of Miss., and Peter Stuart Harllee and Robert Armstrong Harllee, brothers from S. C. Peter Wilson Hairston (1819-1886) was a tobacco planter of southwestern Virginia and north central North Carolina, Confederate soldier, and commission merchant. Other prominent family members include Peter Wilson Hairston's great-grandfather, Major Peter Hairston (1752-1832); his grandmother, Ruth Stovall Hairston (1784-1869); his step-grandfather, Robert Hairston (1782-1852); and his second wife, Frances McCoy Caldwell Hairston (1835-1907). Through his first wife, Columbia Stuart Hairston (d. ca. 1858), Hairston was also related to Jeb Stuart (1833-1864), under whom he served in the Civil War. Peter Wilson Hairston had four children, including Peter W. Hairston (1871-1943), who married Margaret George (1884-1963). They had two sons, Peter W. Hairston Jr. (born 1913) and Nelson G. Hairston (born 1917). The collection includes correspondence, financial and legal papers, plantation ledgers, travel diaries, and miscellaneous items documenting the business and personal affairs of the Hairston family. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence of Peter W. Hairston and financial and legal papers of Major Peter Hairston. Letters and business items also appear for Robert and Ruth Hairston. Only limited information appears on Major Hairston's personal or family life, and no information is available on his Revolutionary War experiences. The papers of Peter W. Hairston provide mostly financial data on his plantations, but there are also letters relating to the courtship of his second wife and to family life in general. Little information appears, however, on his postwar commission firm. Plantations documented include Sauratown Hill in Stokes County and Cooleemee Hill in Davie County, N.C., and other plantations in Surry and Davidson counties, N.C.; Henry and Patrick counties, Va.; and in Columbus, Miss. The papers provide particularly rich opportunities for research on slaves. One volume contains accounts, 1815-1836, with a midwife who chiefly attended slave births. Peter Wilson Hairston's Civil War experiences, including his service, chiefly in Virginia as aid to Jeb Stuart with the 1st Virginia Cavalry and to Jubal A. Early, are documented in his correspondence and his Civil War diary. There are also volumes documenting European travel in the 1840s and 1850s, life in Chapel Hill, N.C., around the same period, documents relating to the work of freedmen and tenant farmers, clippings genealogical materials relating to Hairston family members, and other papers. The addition of October 1997 contains photocopies, typed transcriptions, and indexes of three Hairston family plantation record books and of pages found inserted in the record books. The addition of October 2004 is primarily Hairston family correspondence from 1930 to 1962, including some letters from family members serving in World War II, as well as financial documents and other family papers.

Wartime destruction is still evident in many of the photographs. The photographs appear to have been taken by members of a Pennsylvania photographic club touring the battlefields, who frequently pose at the various sites. The photographs of Burnside's Headquarters in Fredericksburg, Sumner's Crossing, the Bernard House, and the Scott House (in v.3) are on mounts from Centennial Photographic Company, Philadelphia, Pa. Edward L. Wilson and W. Irving Adams, Proprietors. They are identical to the unmarked photographs.

The collection consists of a bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia: with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History" (Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).

The first half of the ledger consists of Francis Walker Gilmer's notes on legal cases heard in the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, 1820-1821. These probably formed the basis of his published book "Reports of Cases Decided in the Court of Appeals of Virginia" (1821). The second half consists chiefly of copies of diary entries from the Civil War made by William Wirt Gilmer a farmer and soldier from Albemarle County. It includes comments on Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, William W. Averell, Fitzhugh Lee, John C. Fremont, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Jefferson, whose ideas he believed led to the war. Many comments on the state of local agriculture during the war are included. There are 26 pages of notes on Italian geography, possibly written in 1781 by George House. With these are a form letter, 1861, Macfarland and Ferguson, Office of the Southern Literary Messenger, Richmond, to W.W. Gilmer; and another letter, 1864 September 25, from Fitzhugh Lee thanking Gilmer for some food he had sent after Lee was wounded.

Generals Carroll, Duryeé, Hartsuff, McDowell, Pope and Ricketts are briefly mentioned.

Members of the Gillespie and Wright family, included James Gillespie (1747?-1805), planter, North Carolina state legislator, 1779-1786, and U.S. congressman, 1793-1799 and 1803-1805. Gillespie was married to Dorcas Mumford Gillespie (1750-1801). Their daughter, Jane (1785-1858), married planter Isaac Wright (1780-1865). The Gillespie and Wright families owned thousands of acres of land and significant numbers of slaves in the lower Cape Fear region of North Carolina, especially in Duplin County. The collection is chiefly legal and financial Papers, 1735-1845, of Gillespie and Wright family members, including land records, deeds, plats, and surveyor's notes; tax records; slave bills of sale and other tiems relating to slaves and slavery; accounts, bills, and receipts; papers relating to business dealings with various Duplin County tenants of Isaac Wright; wills and property inventories; and documents relating to the settlement of the estate of James Moorhead (d. 1808?), for which Isaac Wright and Hinton James (1776-1847) acted as executors. There are also some personal Papers, mostly 1790-1830, of family members. In addition, there are two acrostics by black poet George Moses Horton (circa 1797-circa 1883); a handwritten version of Jeb Stuart's ; and a 1990 Gillespie family tree and short family history. He speculates on Union General Hooker's next movements, describes the battle of Kelly's Ford, mourns the death of Major Pelham, praises his nephew FitzHugh Lee, mentions estimated Union strength as reported by scouts and General J.E.B. Stuart, and notes that General Jackson is near. He mentions that news from the West is favorable, and that the expected loss of Charleston will be heavy but trusts that God shall defeat their enemies. He also mentions Mrs. W.P. Taylor whose house on the Rappahannock River is where the enemy might cross, sends his love to Sis Susy and Mildred, was glad to have seen his son George in Richmond and jokes that Carter and other farmers must raise corn which is in great need or he will have to request the aid of southern women.

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence between members of the Jones family of Louisa County, Va. The collection contains letters written while John William Jones was a student at the University of Virginia in the 1850s. Subjects include smallpox in Charlottesville, student drinking and temperance, and the expelling of F. Pendleton Jones from a preparatory school. Of interest are letters of advise to John from Baptist theologian Crawford H. Toy. Approximately fifty of the letters were written between April 5, 1861 and April 5, 1863 by the brothers John William Jones, F. Pendleton Jones and P. Edloe Jones during their service in the Confederate Army in Virginia. They describe camp life, skirmishes at Romney [West] Va., Martinsburg [West], Va., Munsons' Hill, the battles of Port Republic and Cross Keys, and destruction of railroads. There are comments on Turner Ashby, Stonewall Jackson, A. E. Jones, "Extra Billy" Smith, J.E.B. Stuart, and James Walker and brief mentions of many other generals and officers. Of interest are comments on cowardice of Yankees, desire for peace and doubts about the war's outcome, the death of their mother, religion and the war, Virgiina politics, and the death of Edloe. Correspondents include Francis William Jones; his wife Ann Pendleton Ashby Jones; their children John WIlliam Jones, F. Pendleton Jones, P. Edloe Jones and Helen Jones. Yancey, John Letcher, the 1st Battle of Bull Run. Also of interest is a file on Virginia vs. Freeman, 1917, in which the News leader was tried for contempt of the county court of Charlotte Co. The files also contain Freeman editorials on tariffs, budgets, the defeat of peace and the 1948 Berlin crises.

Among items of interest are an 1859 report by Earl Van Dorn on a skirmish with Commanches, confidential communications of Lee, Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart including telegrams to Stuart before Yellow Tavern, Fitzhugh Lee's report on the Appomattox campaign, letters regarding events of the Cuban revolution including the Isle of Pines uprising, the U.S.S. Maine, and an incident involving General Shafter, and a letter from a former driver offering to serve in the Spanish American War.

Original deposit: The bulk of the original deposit consists of letters to Elizabeth "Bettie" Perkins Hairston. Correspondents include her mother Ann Hairston, who wrote chiefly from the family plantations near Martinsville, Va. between the 1850s and 1890s; her sister, Ruth Stovall Hairston Wilson, who wrote from Danville, Va.; her brother, John A. Hairston, who wrote from school in Staunton, Va., from 1855 to 1857; and her cousin, Jeb Stuart (1833-1875), who wrote from West Point, from 1853 to 1854, and while fighting against the Comanches in Texas, 1855. During the Civil War, Bettie lived with relatives in Yalabusha County, Miss., where she received letters from her family about life on the home front. There are also letters to Bettie, written after her marriage in 1873, from her husband, J.T.W. Hairston in Lowndes County, Miss., where he was trying to run a cotton plantation without enslaved labor. Other significant family correspondence documents the westward movement of various Hairston family members and includes some papers of George Hairston of Halifax County, Va., from circa 1800 to 1820. In addition to correspondence, several account books document family life, including the involvement of family members in at least two stores in Henry County and Danville, Va., from 1800 to 1829. A household account book, dated 1831 to 1869, provides detailed information about weaving, livestock raising, gardening, and other household production. Other financial and legal materials include scattered bills, receipts, depositions, lists and other records of enslaved people, and labor contracts with freedpeople. Additions of 2015: The 2015 additions consist of letters of Anne Wilson, from Dan's Hill (1887-1892); farming contracts, indentures, and assorted sales records; 5 ledgers from the 19th century, at least three of which pertain to the Beaver Creek Plantation in Martinsville, Va.; and other related family papers. Additions of 2016: The bulk of the 2016 additions consists of financial and legal documents, including bills, receipts, accounts, tax assessments, wills, deeds, indentures, agreements, contracts, and slight, scattered correspondence. Materials pertain largely to Hairston and Wilson families' agricultural business interests and their extensive land holdings in Virginia and Mississippi. Numerous documents, including bills of sale, tax assessments, and extracts from wills, reflect the antebellum plantion economy and illustrate the families' use of and reliance on enslaved labor from the colonial period to emancipation. Post emancipation documents include tenant agreements with "colored" farmers. Documents related to land transactions often include surveys of property bought and sold. The bulk of the family correspondence in the additions dates from the 1870s to the 1920s. Bettie Perkins Hairston and Annie Marshall Wilson James are the chief recipients of the letters from this time period. Other papers relate to schools attended by family members, Virginia militias in the early national period, churches, funerals, lodges and clubs, genealogy, and Beaver Creek Plantation. A small number of photographs depict extended family members including Rorer James, Sr. However, most individuals who are pictured are not identified. Addition of 2017: The addition contains genealogical information; family charts; family histories and anecdotes; and transcriptions of nineteenth-century family letters and a household ledger. Most materials were compiled by members of the white Hairston family and related extended families in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Also includes letters written by members of the family that pertain to the book The Hairstons An American Family in Black and White by Henry Wiencek (1999).

Governor Letcher's Executive papers are organized into two series. Series have been designated for Chronological files and Subject files. The bulk of the material can be found in the Chronological files' series which primarily consists of incoming correspondence between 1860 to 1863. Although Governor Letcher did not take office until 1860, there is correspondence addressed to Governor Letcher soon after he was elected between November and December 1859. Correspondence, court cases, telegrams, poll books, pardons, proceedings, receipts, clippings, reports, petitions, resignations, contracts, proclamations, requisitions, resolutions, and other items can be found in this series. Noteworthy correspondents include Jefferson Davis, Gen. Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Joseph R. Anderson (President Tredegar Iron Works), L.P. Walker & James A. Seddon (C.S.A. Secretaries of War), and James Mallory (C.S.A. Secretary of the Navy). The correspondence from Jefferson Davis involves Virginia troops (May 2, 1861), the reduction of service for some soldiers' companies (July 16, 1861), the enrollment of conscripts (Dec. 2, 1862), and the reduction of the number of slaves working on fortifications (Feb. 25, 1863 & March 5, 1863). As commander of all land and naval forces in Virginia, Gen. Robert E. Lee received correspondence referred from Governor Letcher. One such letter relates to the civil and military government alleged to have been established in Norfolk and Portsmouth (March 24, 1862). These letters include Lee's response written on the endorsement. Stonewall Jackson wrote Governor Letcher on several occasions. On October 12, 1861, Jackson wrote regarding Letcher's intended visit. On January 31, 1862, Jackson wrote Letcher complaining about an order from the Secretary of War to fall back from Romney. Jackson expresses his opposition to this order and requests a resignation and another order to be sent back to the Virginia Military Institute. Joseph R. Anderson wrote to Governor Letcher asking him to exempt workers at Tredegar from volunteer service (May 7, 1861) and for other purposes. Also included is a contract between Anderson and the Board of Commissioners to manufacture arms (Aug. 23, 1860). A letter from Secretary of the Navy, James Mallory, involves the transfer of the steamers Jamestown and Yorktown to the Confederate navy (July 15, 1861). Much of the correspondence to Governor Letcher consists of recommendations of Virginians for appointments. The governor appointed coroners; inspectors of salt, flour, tobacco, warehouses and vessels; commissioners; Bank of Virginia directors; and notaries, in addition to positions in the Provisional Army. Numerous petitions accompany these recommendations. Letters by individuals stating their desire to be considered for a particular position are also present. One such letter from Elizabeth L. Stuart asks the governor to reserve a position in the Virginia Provisional Army for her son, Jeb Stuart (April 23, 1861). Governor Letcher dealt with numerous such requests for commissions in the Provisional Army before the governor transferred all Virginia's forces to the Confederate States. Also common are letters and telegrams, mostly from April 1861, to the governor from individuals in support of secession and others who are tendering their service for the war effort. Letcher sent letters to the convention nominating colonels, calling volunteers into service, and issuing commissions (May 1-2, 1861). Letcher nominated Robert E. Lee as commander of all land and naval forces with the rank of Major General (April 22, 1861) and also Thomas J. Jackson as colonel of volunteers. Along these same lines are various requests for exemptions from military service. An ordinance of the convention exempted railroad officers and employees from service. A list of Central Railroad exemptions can be found in these papers (July 16, 1861). An important function of the governor was issuing reprieves and pardons. Copies of court cases, clippings, petitions, and correspondence supplement the pardons. All of the pardon papers are filed separately in the chronological series at the end of each month. One significant pardon involved the case of Notley P. Adams of Patrick County who was charged with arson. Letcher pardoned Adams in December 1863, after he served three years in the penitentiary. A map of the area in Patrick County where the crime was committed is included in the papers. The governor also received and issued proclamations and requisitions regarding escaped convicts and fugitives. Significant are the requisitions involving conspirators who assisted John Brown in his raid on Harper's Ferry (see below). Other noteworthy documents within the chronological series include: a rough copy of the ordinance of the Virginia Convention defining the duties of the Advisory Council (April 23, 1861); a letter from the Virginia Convention to Jefferson Davis inviting him to make Richmond the seat of government of the Confederacy (April 27, 1861); an anonymous letter to Letcher warning of the U.S. government's intention to take Arlington Heights (May 6, 1861); a letter from Letcher to Sam Houston, Governor of Texas, enclosing a copy of the resolution in response to the request of South Carolina and Mississippi for a Conference of the Southern States (May 24, 1860); a resolution of the state of Tennessee on state's rights (May 24, 1860); telegrams from the states of Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi announcing their secession from the Union (Jan. 10-12, 1861); a proclamation by Letcher to the people of northwestern Virginia regarding secession (June 17, 1861); deed of the state of Virginia to the Confederate States of America transferring property including all the machinery and stores at Harper's Ferry and the armory in Richmond (Oct. 3, 1861). A drawing of a "steam gun" designed by Philip Strickler (Oct. 29, 1861); a message from Letcher to the General Assembly announcing the death of former President John Tyler (Jan. 18, 1862); a 15-page report by Jeb Stuart to Gen. Lee on the Pamunkey expedition (June 23, 1862); lists of negro convicts employed by Joseph R. Anderson & Co. (Sept. 3, 1862); a list of prisoners taken by Maj. Gen. Floyd confined in the State Armory (Dec. 29-30, 1862); report of S. Bassett French calculating the slave population in those counties where requisitions were made for slaves to work on fortifications (March 20, 1863); deed of the Hollywood Cemetery Company to the Commonwealth of Virginia for a section to bury President Tyler (March 17, 1863); a telegram from James P. Smith, Guineas Station, to Letcher regarding the condition of Gen. Jackson (May 5, 1863); and a message from Letcher to the House of Delegates transmitting a statement of the number of troops furnished the Confederate States by Virginia (Oct. 8, 1863). The second series of Governor Letcher's Executive papers contains subject files. There are three subjects represented in this series: the Advisory Council, John Brown's Raid, and Railroads. The materials related to the Advisory Council include correspondence, proceedings, and reports of committees between April and June of 1861. Governor Letcher often referred correspondence to the Advisory Council and the endorsement on the letter details the Council's action with regard to the letter. One letter, in particular, from Robert E. Lee is relevant to the preparations for the defense of Virginia (June 15, 1861). The majority of the correspondence, however, concerns appointments in the Provisional Army and other military matters. The proceedings contain reports of the Committee for Courts of Justice, the Committee of Propositions and Grievances, the Committee on Finance, and the Committee on Military Affairs. The John Brown's Raid documents include correspondence related to the request for pardon of conspirators, Aaron D. Stevens and Albert Hazlett, and information concerning fugitive conspirators Barclay Cappoc, Owen Brown, and Francis Merriam. Particularly interesting is a printed protest by the Democratic members of the Iowa General Assembly condemning Governor Kirkwood's refusal to extradite Barclay Cappoc. There are copies of the indictments for Francis Merriam, Jeremiah Anderson, Owen Brown, and Charles P. Tidd. Military expenses incurred by militia, yet unpaid, are also documented here. Lastly, material concerning railroads include correspondence with regard to railroad connections and the ordinance of the convention relieving railroad workers from military duty and arming them for the defense of the railroads. A roll of the Richmond & Danville Railroad Guard is included. Accession 19736 has been included in Governor Letcher's Executive Papers. This accession consists of a letter from Susan E. Wash to Governor Letcher asking that her husband be relieved from military service. Endorsement of Gov. Letcher, dated May 7, 1861, grants the request. Accession 19923 has been included in Governor Letcher's Executive Papers. This accession consists of a letter from Major Gen. T.J. Jackson, Winchester, to Governor Letcher. In this letter, Jackson comments on the military situation and requests reinforcements and arms to be sent to Winchester, Nov. 30, 1861. Accession 33651 has been included in Governor Letcher's Executive Papers. This accession consists of a letter from John H. Winder to Governor Letcher regarding the sentence of J.C. Northwood, April 6, 1863.

The first half of the ledger consists of Francis Walker Gilmer's notes on legal cases heard in the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, 1820-1821. These probably formed the basis of his published book "Reports of Cases Decided in the Court of Appeals of Virginia" (1821). The second half consists chiefly of copies of diary entries from the Civil War made by William Wirt Gilmer a farmer and soldier from Albemarle County. It includes comments on Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, William W. Averell, Fitzhugh Lee, John C. Fremont, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Jefferson, whose ideas he believed led to the war. Many comments on the state of local agriculture during the war are included. There are 26 pages of notes on Italian geography (Notes on Geography Italia), possibly written in 1781 by George House. With these are a form letter, 1861, Macfarland and Ferguson, Office of the Southern Literary Messenger, Richmond, to W.W. Gilmer; and another letter, 1864 September 25, from Fitzhugh Lee thanking Gilmer for some food he had sent after Lee was wounded.

Battles described in detail and in which his regiment participated include Chancellorsville (1863), Winchester (1864), and Five Forks (1865), where he was wounded. Officers primarily described include Robert E. Lee, Gustave T. Beauregard, and Jeb Stuart.
