This collection contains materials, 1851-1864, relating to the military service of Jeb Stuart in the United States and Confederate armies. Items in the collection include a field book, 1861-1863, containing official reports of military operations, including the battles of 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, the Seven Days, and 2nd Bull Run; a letterbook, 1862-1864, containing official letters regarding the organization of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, under Stuart's command; various commissions, 1854-1861, held by Stuart in the U.S. and C.S.A. armies; and, letters, 1862, to Stuart from Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), Stonewall Jackson (1824-1863), and Joseph E. Johnston (1807- 1891) congratulating him on his promotion to overall command of the cavalry in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart, soldier, was born 6 February 1833, on "Laurel Hill" plantation, Patrick County, Virginia. He died 12 May 1864 and is buried in Richmond, Virginia. Stuart graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (1850); received his commission (1854); and transferred to the Cavalry (1855). Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
