Papers of Walter Q. Hullihen [manuscript], 1861-1873.

The papers include correspondence, 1861-1873, of Walter Quarles Hullihen, with friends and family, chiefly about Civil War experiences. Of primary interest is his friend Brockburn's description of his service with General Early at the battle of Cedar Creek, October 1864 and at Middletown; Hullihen's service with General J.E.B. Stuart at Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, and Fredericksburg; and Stuart's recommendation, September 1863, for Hullihen's promotion to Captain. Postwar material includes a circular letter, October 1866, pertaining to failed efforts to raise money for a monument to memorialize Gen. J.E.B. Stuart; a letter, 1873, concerning a memorial for R.E. Lee in Lexington, Va.; and a note, 1889, from Jefferson Davis thanking Hullihen for the prayer for Southern patriotism and remembering Confederate veterans.
