Isaac Hull (1773-1843) commanded USS Constitution in her 1812 victory over Guerriere, in which it earned the sobriquet "Old Ironsides." He later commanded the Boston, Portsmouth, and Washington Navy yards and was appointed Commodore of the Mediterranean Squadron in 1838.
Isaac Hull was born 9 March 1773 Huntington (now Shelton) CT. He died 13 February 1843 Philadelphia PA.
Isaac Hull, U.S. naval officer, was born in Shelton, Connecticut on March 9, 1773. He joined the Navy in 1798 and saw action in the hostilities with France that year, the War with Tripoli and the War of 1812, when he, in command of the Constitution, defeated HMS Guerriere. He was CO of the Pacific and Mediterranean Squadrons in the post-war period.

Isaac Hull (1773-1843), the nephew and adopted son of William Hull (1753-1825), was a naval officer in the U.S. Navy from 1798 to 1841. During the Tripolitan War, Hull, commander of the brig _Argus_, cooperated with William Eaton in capturing the town of Derne, as this was essential to Eaton's plan of restoring Hamet Caramalli as Bashaw of Tripoli.
William Eaton (1764-1811) graduated from Dartmouth College in 1790. He was commissioned captain in the U.S. Army in 1792 and, in 1798, was appointed U.S. consul to Tunis. During the Tripolitan War, Eaton served as a special representative of the American government, with the title "Navy Agent to the Barbary States."

Title:
Tobias Lear diary, 1803 June 24 - October 23.
Lear discusses his day to day affairs including marriage to "my dear Fanny" [Frances Dandridge Henley]; boarding with [Thomas?] Law; initiation in the Masonic Lodge at Alexandria; dining with Jefferson and Madison, news of the Louisiana Purchase; July 4th celebration; journey to Boston via Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York; visit to his Portsmouth, N.H. home; a rumor, begun by John Marshall, that he had suppressed certain papers of George Washington; and preparations for the journey to Algiers on the U.S. Constitution under Edward Preble [no entries the month of the voyage.]. Lear writes at length about his diplomatic mission to Algiers to negotiate a treaty with Tripoli and the current situation with the Barbary pirates. He discusses the capture of an American brig; the replacement of Commodore Richard Morris; assistance to the H.M.S. Childers, an English brig in distress, whose captain, Sir George Bolton, was carrying dispatches to Lord Nelson; discussions on Barbary affairs with consuls James L. Cathcart and James Simpson; the arrival of the Emperor of Morocco in Tangiers and subsequent negotiations including ratification of the Treay of 1786; and attempts by British men of war to lure away American sailors. The diary ends on October 23, a week before the capture of William Bainbridge and the crew of the Philadelphia. Additional people mentioned in the diary include William Bainbridge, John Dandridge Henley, Isaac Hull, David Humphreys, Rufus King, Benjamin Lincoln, John Rodgers, Samuel Smith, James Sullivan, and the Marqués de Yrujo.

Barnes, John S. (John Sanford), 1836-1911. Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection, 1756-1931.
Title:
Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection, 1756-1931.
The collection consists of more than 1,100 letters, clippings, reprints, and other documents amassed by John Sanford Barnes and others to, from, and about notable persons including many with named series in the Naval History Society Collection (e.g., William Bainbridge, John Barry , French E. Chadwick, Gustavus Conyngham, Gustavus Vasa Fox, Caspar F. Goodrich, Isaac Hull, John Paul Jones, Richard Worsam Meade 3rd, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Henry A. Wise). Highlights of the series include documents signed by Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison; others signed by John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, Richard Henry Dana, David Farragut, Robert Fulton, John Hancock, Rufus King, Seth Low, Robert Morris, and Matthew C. Perry; and a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair removed after his death and sent by Robert Todd Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox at the latter's request. Among David Porter's letters are cartoons and drawings by him, including one of animal-headed naval officers listening to explanations of the value of steam-powered vessels, which complement others in the Naval History Society's Fox collection. The William Smith folder includes a map of an attack on Whampoa, China, in 1870. It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

Hull, Isaac, 1773-1843. Papers, 1810-1842.
Title:
Papers, 1810-1842.
This is the most extensive collection of documents relative to the career of Isaac Hull and his many years service in the U.S. Navy. The papers span the years 1810 to 1842 and include letters and letter-books, ledgers and account books, log books and ships papers, legal records and official reports, meteorological observations and sundry printed matter. Some of the more interesting documents were published in Commodore Hull: Papers of Isaac Hull (Boston, 1929). The bulk of the collection falls around 1840, during his period of service in the Mediterranean, when he had command of "Ohio," "Cyane," "Brandywine" and "Preble." Of great importance are the many letters from officials in Washington and U.S. consuls overseas, including William Tudor, Obadiah Rich and Hosea Sprague, which give a good account of political and military conditions at home and abroad. The papers, in sum, present a vivid picture of the development of the U.S. Navy during a critical period, beset by frequently hostile European forces and by suspicious bureaucrats in Washington, yet strengthened by the character, resolve and the organizational abilities of clear-minded sailors such as Commodore Hull. Also included in the collection are William Miller's account of the battle of Ayacucho (1825) and Bernardo O'Higgins' "To the virtuous inhabitants of the Archipelago of Chiloe" (1826).

Samuel Jarvis accounts for the papers of her father, Capt. Elisha Hart, within the collection. Samuel Jarvis, Jr. was executor for the estate of his aunt, Ann (Hart) Hull, widow of Commodore Isaac Hull. Notebooks within the collection belonged to her, and contain news clippings regarding the death of the Commodore. The passport of Ellen Anderson Jarvis, daughter of Samuel, Jr., is among the notebooks as well as identification cards from her service as a nurse during World War I. Sarah and Samuel Jarvis divorced in 1842. One letter, written by Sarah, discusses the division of property.
